Cowboys OL Decimation Continues After All-Pro Reveals Injury

The Dallas Cowboys have been on a heater of injuries to their offensive line.

First Terrence Steele got hurt – although he is now back to practice. Then, Robert Jones suffered a broken bone in his neck, just a day after jumping ahead onto the first team at right guard.

Then, left tackle, Tyler Guyton suffered a bone fracture in his knee, which will sideline him for around 4-6 weeks, causing him to quite possibly have to sit out week one of the regular season.

And now – three injuries later, the Cowboys are now faced with perhaps their best offensive lineman; after the retirement of Zack Martin; potentially seeing some time on the sidelines, when Tyler Smith walked off the field of play on Thursday – although he did so of his own volition and without assistance.

Tyler Smith Has Knee Tendinitis

Subsequently, Jerry Jones told The Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins that Smith was suffering from tendinitis in his knee.

It is not clear if Smith will miss time – or indeed how much time, if he is in fact needing of time on the sidelines.

Generally for knee (patellar) tendinitis, players can get back to their normal activities within three weeks, depending on the severity. In more severe cases, it can take months. Given that Smith was able to walk off by himself, and that Jones did not state anything about being particularly worried, it is more likely than not that this is potentially a mild version of the injury.

What Does The Cowboys’ Offensive Line Look Like Now?

With Guyton, Jones, and now Smith out – at least for the time being. The Dallas Cowboys’ first team offensive line will likely present as follows.

LT: Nate Thomas/Asim Richards

LG: Brock Hoffman

C: Cooper Beebe

RG: Tyler Booker

RT: Terrence Steele.

Steele retains his spot upon his return, whilst 2024 seventh round pick, Nate Thomas and 2023 fifth round pick, Asim Richards, split reps at left tackle in Guyton’s absence.

If Smith is out for the longer run – or at least for the remainder of training camp, this will likely remain the starting lineup for the foreseeable future, with the team ultimately making a decision between Thomas and Richards opposite Steele.

If, however, Smith’s condition is not serious, he could be a wild card to be moved outside to LT, whilst Hoffman fills in at guard. But given that Thomas and Richards have both shown ability in the offseason – and that they were the replacements prior to Smith’s injury, it’s more likely that the team will roll with one of them to start the season, if Guyton is not ready by early September.
