Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Drops Interesting Coaching Message

When the Dallas Cowboys hired head coach Brian Schottenheimer, it felt like it went under the radar a bit. Schottenheimer is the son of legendary head coach Marty Schottenheimer, but there was reason to believe this move was something that Jerry Jones wasn’t exactly the biggest fan of.

Fast forward a few months, and it seems like the Cowboys made the right decision. However, according to Jones, there was another coach on his radar over the past few years, but it never came to light. That coach was none other than Sean Payton, the Denver Broncos head coach.

“Several times. It just never fit,” Jones said, per CBS Sports. “He was never there when we needed to be thinking about making a change.

“The timing never fit. He’s certainly one of the better coaches that I’ve been around in my career. And we’ve always had a tremendous respect for his ability to coach a team in every respect. I thought before he ever was a head coach that it probably would happen here. Turned out he took that New Orleans job and the rest is history. There’s no coach that we think any more of, respect any more, than we do Sean Payton.”

Would Sean Payton Succeed With the Cowboys?

Payton and the Denver Broncos have played some really good football under him.

During his first season, which included Russell Wilson under center, the Broncos struggled mightily. However, it was tough to blame Payton too much for that instance. Had the Dallas Cowboys had him and he had his quarterback, like Dak Prescott, ready to go, it wouldn’t have been too surprising to see him find immediate success.

Regarding what Schottenheimer has done for the Dallas Cowboys, the first few months of his tenure have gone as well as anybody could’ve expected. He’s done what he’s had to do offensively, and the Cowboys’ defense has simply been so bad due to the players on the roster that it’s tough to blame him and Matt Eberflus.

Jerry Jones is Happy With Brian Schottenheimer

Jones has also been impressed with what Schottenheimer has done in recent weeks, going on record saying that his coaching against the Washington Commanders was one of the most impressive coaching outings that he’s seen in a long time.

This is high praise from Jones, who expects the most out of everybody in the building, so it’s safe to say that he feels confident in his hire.

“To me, last week was about as good a coaching job as I’ve been around since I don’t know when,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan.

“To some degree, we didn’t have no way to go but up on defense. But I didn’t expect this kind of performance from our defense. So, kudos to (DC Matt Eberflus) and certainly Brian Schottenheimer. He had a lot of fingerprints on this (Sunday),” Jones said, according to Machota.

“He’s the head coach, obviously he calls the (offensive) plays, and there he is spending a lot of (last) week working with the defensive coordinator. That’s a coach. That is a coach right there.”
