If Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was looking to stoke the fires ahead of Sunday night’s Week 4 game against the Green Bay Packers, then mission accomplished.
Jones took a broad swipe at former Cowboys star and Green Bay edge rusher Micah Parsons just days ahead of the game, seemingly putting the Cowboys lack of Super Bowl wins in recent years on his shoulders.
“While (Parsons) does make great plays, there is also a way to approach playing against Micah,” Jones said on Dallas radio station 105.3-FM The Fan on September 26. “As we know, we didn’t exactly win the Super Bowl those years.”
The Cowboys-Packers game was already front and center on the NFL’s slate headed into the weekend — mainly because of what’s been bubbling under the surface between Jones and Parsons since the Cowboys traded the 3-time NFL All-Pro to the Packers in exchange for 2 first round picks and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark on August 28.
Jones has become famous for figuring out ways to stir the pot — and stir up controversy — over the years. There’s no reason this week should be any different.
“Jerry Jones isn’t running this team to win a Super Bowl,” ESPN’s Ryan Clark said on September 23. “He’s running this team to have it be talked about. Running this team to have it in the tabloids. Running this team to have it be a reality show and a soap opera, not to be an actual contender.”
Unsavory Stat Hit Cowboys at End of Last Season
While the Cowboys have won 3 Super Bowls since Jones bought the team in 1989, they haven’t won a Super Bowl since the 1995 season and haven’t even made the NFC Championship Game since that season.
In that time the Cowboys have watched 2 of their NFC East rivals, the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles, each win a pair of Super Bowls, with the Eagles winning their latest title following the 2024 season.
The 2024 season also brought a new level of ignominy to the Cowboys when their other NFC East rival, the Washington Commanders, made the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991.
With the Commanders making it, that meant that all 15 other teams in the NFC had made it to the NFC Championship Game in the time since the Cowboys last made an appearance.
Prescott Could Ultimately Pay for Jones’ Comments
Any trash talk coming from Jones might ultimately put the Cowboys most important player and the highest paid player in the NFL at risk in quarterback Dak Prescott.
It’s Prescott — not Jones — who will ultimately have to try and escape the clutches of Parsons, who was his teammate since 2021 and is one of just 2 players in NFL history to have at least 12.0 sacks in each of their first 4 seasons alongside Pro Football Hall of Famer Reggie White.
“I doubt it will be closure,” Prescott said. “I doubt (the media) is done with that. Some way, somehow it will get brought up again. Who knows? So excited to play him, excited to play this week. As I said, I think it’ll be a fun banter back and forth with a hell of a competitor.”
