Thanks to his botched contract negotiations with superstar linebacker Micah Parsons, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones isn’t exactly a popular figure right now. And yet, a surprising non-football announcement he recently resulted in fans rallying around the longtime face of Dallas football.
Jones purchased the Cowboys back in 1989 for $140 million, and ever since then, he has been in charge of the team, acting as their de facto general manager during his time in charge of the team. And while Jones has enjoyed a successful career with Dallas, he revealed that he underwent a decade-long battle with cancer during the 2010s.
Jerry Jones Shares Shocking Cancer Revelation
Jones enjoyed a lot of success early in his tenure with the Cowboys, as they won Super Bowls XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX in the 1990s. Since their most recent championship in 1995, though, Dallas has gone just 7-13 in the playoffs, failing to advance to the NFC Championship Game a single time over the past 30 years.
During that time, the goodwill Jones built up during the beginning stages of his time in charge of the team has nearly vanished. Drawn-out contract negotiations with star players like Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Parsons over the past couple of years have certainly not helped, and some folks have begun to question whether the 82-year-old Jones is in good enough health to be leading the team.
By now, Jones is used to facing this sort of criticism, as it’s pretty much par for the course. However, some comments Jones made in the new Netflix documentary series “America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys” raised some more questions about the health of the Cowboys’ owner. When asked about his comments, Jones revealed that he endured a decade-long battle with cancer that he won thanks to an experimental trial drug.
“I was saved by a fabulous treatment and great doctors and a real miracle [drug] called PD-1 [therapy],” Jones said, via Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News. “I went into trials for that PD-1 and it has been one of the great medicines. I now have no tumors.”

Jones revealed that he was diagnosed with cancer back in 2010 and that he underwent four surgeries to treat the disease. It was a long, hard battle, but Jones prevailed, as he is now free of tumors. So with that being said, it appears his health is not an issue, and that he will continue to lead Dallas as their owner and general manager for the foreseeable future.
In order for Jones and the Cowboys to experience success in the upcoming campaign, they are going to need to tie up some loose ends before the start of the new season. That includes agreeing to a long-term contract with Parsons, which has proven to be far more difficult to accomplish than initially expected. There is still time for Jones and company to get Dallas ready for the start of the season, but it’s clear that the sooner they take care of Parsons, the better off they will be.
