With all due respect to the Cowboys offensive players–center Cooper Beebe and receiver Jonathan Mingo–who have been on injured reserve, the real rejoicing on Monday came with the update from coach Brian Schottenheimer that the team will open the practice window no two potentially game-changing defensive players. That would be linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and rookie third-round pick Shavon Revel.
Schottenheimer said the pair will be on the field practicing on Wednesday after starting the season in injured reserve. Under NFL rules, they have three weeks to get back into game action once the practice window is opened. That means the much-battered–but perhaps (?) improving–Cowboys defense should be in line for some reinforcements sooner rather than later.
For a team coming off a 44-22 win over Washington on Sunday and now sitting at 3-3-1, that’s very good news.
Cowboys Defense Waiting on DeMarvion Overshown, Shavon Revel
It’s hard to say, of course, how effective each will be. Overshown was a third-round pick in 2023, and missed all of his rookie season with a knee injury. He played 12 games at linebacker last year and logged 5.0 sacks before again tearing ligament sin his knee.
Revel played only three games at East Carolina last season before a torn ACL injury knocked him out for the year, and he’s been working to return since. He’s had setbacks which have slowed the process. The Cowboys badly need help at cornerback and the team thought enough of his skillset last April that they drafted him with a Day 2 pick despite his injury.
Schottenheimer did say that cornerback Trevon Diggs, who suffered a concussion at home last week, is still in concussion protocol after being examined by team doctors on Monday.
Brian Schottenheimer: ‘The Plan Is Good News’
Schottenheimer was happy to be getting the reinforcements–though he warned that practicing does not necessarily mean playing.
“The plan is good news. We’ll be bringing Mingo active. Beebe, we’ll open his window. Expect him to be out there Wednesday,” Schottenheimer said. “Revel, we’re gonna open his window. And then No. 0 (Overshown) will be out there running around on Wednesday. Again, don’t predict they’re all playing but we’re excited to get those guys back.
“They worked so hard, man, I am really–both D-Mo and ‘Von, they worked so hard that I am excited to get them out there. But we’ll be smart, we’ll ramp them up and see how they do.”

Cowboys Defense Still Worst in the NFL
The Cowboys were better in Week 7 against the Commanders, but they still rank No. 32 in the league in yards allowed, with 2,811 and No. 32 in passing yards allowed at 1,822.
Schottenheimer wants to see better overall consistency, but no doubt, the defense needs it most.
“Last night, I will say it again, there were things we need to clean up,” Schottenheimer said. “Offensively, our pass protection was not the standard. I think Dak took too many hits last night for different reasons, different breakdowns and all that. Defensively, we have to make people kick field goals in the red zone. You have to do that.
“The league is high-scoring league right now and you have to do that. It starts with us stopping the run in the red zone and then getting off the field in third down.”
