Cowboys Urged to Trade $97 Million All-Pro for Late Round Draft Pick

If Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is truly the world class salesman he’s told us all he is for the last 40 years, there is one truly epic deal out there waiting to be made if he wants a challenge.

There is no bigger albatross hanging around the franchise’s collective neck than veteran NFL All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs, who has gone from an NFL All-Pro to an unproductive, unreliable player who has what might be the NFL’s worst non-quarterback contract with a 5-year, $97 million contract extension he signed in July 2023.

ESPN’s Todd Archer pitched a scenario in which the Cowboys and Jones figure out a way to get rid of Diggs and his massive salary via a trade.

“At his best, Diggs was a quarterback-baiting interception machine, a Pro Bowler,” Archer wrote on October 26. “But it has been some time since he has been that guy … He is scheduled to make $14.5 million in 2026. If the team cuts him without a post-June 1 designation next year, it would save $12.5 million against the cap. The question becomes what could the Cowboys get for him in a trade? Maybe a better question is this: If the Cowboys are going to move on from him after this season for salary cap purposes, why not take a Day 3 pick back in return if they can get it? If he is cut, then the Cowboys would get no compensation in return.”

The biggest challenge in this scenario is finding a team to Jedi Mind Trick into making a deal for Diggs.

Diggs On Injured Reserve After Mysterious Accident

Diggs has missed last week’s blowout win over the Washington Commanders and will now miss at least the next 4 games after he was placed on injured reserve with concussion symptoms after a mysterious accident at home — the details of which still have yet to be disclosed.

It’s the third consecutive season in which Diggs will be out for an extended period of time.

In 2023, he missed 15 games after he tore his ACL. In 2024, he missed 6 games with more knee issues and was fined $500,000 by the Cowboys for missed workouts in the offseason.

Cowboys Paying Big Money For Little Production

The Cowboys are paying approximately $187 million for their 2 starting cornerbacks and getting little to no production out of them — cornerback Daron Bland signed a 4-year, $90 million contract before the 2025 season.

“Cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland — both signed to $90M contract extensions, have led the NFL in interceptions in their careers,” former ESPN reporter Ed Werder wrote on his official X account on October 16. “This season, they have no interceptions and no passes defensed. They have not touched the football in six games — Diggs INT vs GB negated by penalty.”

The latest setback for Diggs — and the mysterious circumstances around it — may have made it so he’s played his last game in a Cowboys uniform.

“Certainly feels like Trevon Diggs has played his last game for the Dallas Cowboys,” The Fort Worth Star Telegram’s Nick Harris wrote on his official X account on October 25. “Just a hunch.”
