Cowboys WR Gets Tough Update on Training Camp Injury

For the Cowboys, wide receiver Parris Campbell was always going to be a bit of a longshot to earn a roster spot. After the team acquired receiver George Pickens to pair with star CeeDee Lamb, the bottom of the depth chart looked a lot shakier, as it is possible the team now may roll with only five wide receivers on the roster.

That would likely mean Jalen Tolbert, Kavontae Turpin and Jonathan Mingo are the only safe bets to be on the final roster. A sixth receiver is possible, but the Cowboys certainly are not going with seven, and Campbell was always going to be hard-pressed to work his way into the first six options.

Campbell is the former Ohio State star who went to the same high school (St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron, Ohio) as LeBron James. He was a second-round pick by the Colts, but has never really lived up to his billing.

Parris Campbell: MCL Sprain

Now, bad news for Campbell: The injury that knocked him out of Saturday’s camp practice in Oxnard, California, is a bit worse than expected. According to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News:

“Update on some injuries: Cowboys WR Parris Campbell has a MCL sprain in his knee, according to a person with knowledge of the injury.”

The recovery time for that injury can vary, depending on the severity of the injury. Certainly, things could have been worse–if the MCL had been torn, for example. Now, Campbell could miss anywhere from two weeks to more than a month, and with only about a month of camp ahead for the Cowboys, his chances are not helped.

Cowboys Looking for a WR3

The Cowboys do have a dynamic duo at the top of the depth chart, but are still in need of reliable options beyond Lamb and Pickens. The team has long had unmet expectations for Tolbert, and there is hope that Mingo, acquired in a trade with the Panthers last year, could develop into a contributor this season.

But, after he signed with the Cowboys, Campbell did point out that coach Brian Schottenheimer had reached out to him personally.

Said Campbell: “It’s rare to have a head coach calling you, so that stood out to me. I think the big thing is the speed that I bring. I was talking to coach [Brian] Schottenheimer and [offensive coordinator Klayton Adams], and some of the stuff they’re trying to add this year to the offense definitely suits my abilities — like runaways and crossers, speed routes.”
