Cristiano Ronaldo was left red-faced after he was sent off during Portugal’s crunch World Cup qualifying clash against Republic of Ireland.
The Boys in Green took a shock 2-0 lead in the first-half with Troy Parrott scoring a brace to put the home side in control and keep their qualifying hopes alive.
Ronaldo was given his marching orders in the 62nd minute, initially shown a yellow card after swinging an elbow at defender Dara O’Shea.
The 40-year-old was spotted making a crying gesture in the direction of O’Shea and the Irish supporters.
But his tune quickly changed after referee Glenn Nyberg was instructed by VAR to review the decision.
The Swedish official quickly spotted the severity of the infringement, overturning his original decision and brandishing the red card and sending Ronaldo on his way.
The Al-Nassr star sarcastically applauded the home crowd as he left the pitch with television cameras picking up one fan repeating the same crying gesture back to Ronaldo as he trudged off.

The former Manchester United star was also involved in a heated debate with Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrímsson before disappearing down the tunnel.
Ronaldo will now miss Portugal’s final qualifying game against Armenia this weekend – and possibly their opening games of the World Cup next summer if his nation get that far.
