The Detroit Lions are just days away from their season opener, which will be an important road game. The team will being their regular season against the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at 4:25 p.m. Eastern time, and plenty in the Motor City and beyond will be watching.
The Lions have a chance to still be contenders this season, even after losing both of the top coordinators to other NFL teams. But, they’ll have to be healthier than they were last season to do it. This year will mark an important year for the Lions, since they’re coming off two strong seasons, albeit a surprising loss in the playoffs to the Washington Commanders.
One area that those who follow the Lions have been yelling at Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes to take care of is defensive end. While the Lions have Aidan Hutchinson, they don’t have another superstar to pair with him, and their depth in this position is in question.
Dan Campbell Doesn’t Seem to Want Smith Back
Bringing Za’Darius Smith back to the Lions would certainly help their defense. Last season, fresh off of a Pro-Bowl sophomore NFL season, Hutchinson led the Lions with 7.5 sacks even after not playing in 12 full games. But, he can’t do it alone.
But, during a Wednesday, September 3, appearance on 97.1 The Ticket’s Costa and Jansen, Lions head coach Dan Campbell discussed the team’s edge rusher depth and talked about not bringing Smith back.
“We’re good right now, we are pretty good here,” Campbell said. “We got (Marcus) Davenport, we got good depth. I like what we got interior too. We got a lot of flexibility, and we’re sitting pretty good right now. So we’re ready to go.”
Za’Darius Smith’s Girlfriend to the Rescue
Not everyone was happy with Campbell’s response. Za’Darius Smith’s girlfriend, Detroit rapper Kash Doll, made her thoughts clear on social media.
On Instagram, the rapper posted a gallery of photos at a concert, wearing her Lions No. 99 jersey, in honor of Smith. Her caption was, “Hey coach,” with a wave, “we’re good.”
A few followers commented, one stating, “I just wanna know is he done with football or he’s looking for team to sign him? The season is here. Maybe Houston, Dallas, New England or Vegas needs help.”
“One thing about Kash her man gone be walking behind her that’s how I like mines, not too far behind,” another said. “I love this for (Kash Doll), her man is literally always supporting her,” another said. “All (Smith) gotta do is play his part by loving Kash and her kids and ignoring Tiny T, that’s the only response needed, just like Ciara and Russel.”
“I just love her and Z together,” another commented. “My dad always said as long as a man is doing the 3 P’s you gotta take the bad with the good. From our view, he definitely ‘Provides, Protects, & Professes,” they added. “The devil is always busy, don’t let him win.”
So, Kash Doll has her man’s back. Now, when the season starts, maybe Campbell and Holmes will finally realize they need some help, and that Smith could be the guy to do it.
