Darius Slay’s Wife Sends Cryptic Message as Bills Come Under Fire

The Buffalo Bills hoped to upgrade their secondary when they claimed veteran Darius Slay off waivers this week, but were instead left with a mess that included one lost player and another who refused to report to Buffalo.

Slay was cut loose by the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier in the week in what was described as a mutual decision to part ways. The Bills landed him with a waiver claim, but Slay quickly decided that he would not report to Buffalo — while dropping hints that he wanted to return to the Philadelphia Eagles for the tail end of his final NFL season before retirement.

Slay’s wife is now joining the conversation, leaving a cryptic message on social media that has led to some criticism of the Bills.

Darius Slay’s Wife Leaves Pointed Message

Jennifer Slay has been open on social media about her affinity for the Eagles and desire for her husband to return there. On Friday, after the Bills announced that they would be placing Slay on the reserve list and not waiving him, she took to X to leave what appeared to be a pointed message.

“Don’t throw rocks then hide your hand,” Slay wrote.

While Jennifer Slay did not directly reference the Bills in her post, many replied with angry messages toward Buffalo and general manager Brandon Beane for not granting Darius Slay his apparent wish to be waived.

Others are putting pressure on the Bills to waive Slay. Former NFL player turned commentator Emmanuel Acho interviewed Slay on the “The Speakeasy” podcast and pressed Slay’s cast.

“Dear Bills fans, Darius Slay has all the respect in the world for the Organization, but he also has a 18 year old son in his senior year,” Acho wrote in a post on X.

Slay had told Acho that he didn’t want to uproot his family for the conclusion of his NFL career, saying his decision was nothing against the Bills’ organization specifically.

“I don’t feel like packing up and moving again,” Slay said on “The Speakeasy.” “I’m 13 years in, like, I done did it. Like, they would have caught me at like 28, 29, I might have been like ‘OK.’ That’s a top organization. They have a lot of great things going. They win, they go to the playoffs, they got a franchise quarterback. So, it wasn’t a bad fit, it just caught me at a bad time.”

Bills Make Another Move for Their Defense

The Bills parted ways with veteran cornerback Ja’Marcus Ingram to make way for Slay, a move that didn’t sit well with head coach Sean McDermott. He expressed anger and frustration on Thursday, telling reporters that the team had hoped to get Ingram back on their practice squad before he was claimed on waivers by the Houston Texans.

The decision to place Slay on the reserve list meant the roster spot remained open, and the Bills filled it on Friday by claiming former first-round safety Darnell Savage off waivers.

Savage appeared in 10 games this season with the Washington Commanders and Jacksonville Jaguars, making 16 total tackles with two passes defensed.
