Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts proved once again why heâs one of the most respected and classy managers in baseball.Â
After the Dodgers clinched their second straight NLCS berth with a Game 4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, Roberts took a moment to empathize with Phillies reliever Orion Kerkering, whose fielding error in the 11th innings cost the Phillies the game.
Kerkering was visibly crushed after the game, standing on the field with his head down as the Dodgers celebrated around him.
Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto and right fielder Nick Castellanos quickly came to console him, followed by manager Rob Thomson, who offered words of encouragement before leading the young pitcher off the field.Â
But even on the opposing side, Robertsâ compassion stood out. Speaking with reporters after the game, the Dodgersâ skipper made sure to give high praise to Kerkering amid the heartbreak.
âItâs brutal,â Roberts said. âObviously they played great defense tonight. Itâs one of those things â itâs a PFP, a pitcherâs fielding practice and heâs done it a thousand times. Right there, Iâm sure he was so focused on getting the hitter that he just sort of forgot the outs and the situation. Kerkering is a stud and you definitely feel for a player.â
Dave Roberts Mixed Emotions on the SituationÂ
Roberts added that while he was thrilled with his teamâs win, he couldnât help but feel empathy for the young reliever.
âIâm obviously happy that we won, but heâs had a heck of a year and heâs a heck of a pitcher.â
Roberts has been around professional baseball for over 30 years. Few understand better than him that at the end of the day, itâs just a game and players are still human.
Itâs just another example of why Roberts is such a respected leader. He is the kind of manager his players love to play for, and one whoâs earned respect from people all around the MLB.Â
Orion Kerkering Future OutlookÂ
Despite the heartbreaking moment, Orion Kerkeringâs future remains incredibly bright.Â
Over the 2025 season, he posted a 3.30 ERA, struck out 65 batters in 60 innings, and recorded four saves in 69 appearances.Â
In 2024, he appeared in 64 games and had an amazing 2.29 ERA with 74 strikeouts and only 17 walks.Â
At 24 years old, Kerkering is one of the bright young relievers in baseball. With his electric fastball-slider combo, he is poised to be a big part of the Phillies future.Â
He will undoubtedly have plenty more chances to shine in big moments ahead.
