With the New York Giants having been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs for several weeks now, some fans, analysts, and even former players are calling for Jaxson Dart to be benched for the remainder of the season.
The latest to express that opinion is none other than Super Bowl XLII helmet-catch hero and former Giants receiver David Tyree, something he expressed on the New York Post’s “Blue Rush Podcast” after the loss to the Commanders.
Tyree Believes ‘The Risks Are Too Great’ For Dart To Play
Talking to another former Giants wideout and current TV/podcast host, Brandon London, Tyree indicated that “the risks are too great” for Jaxson Dart to play out the string this season with nothing meaningful to play for.
Tyree said, “And I think they need to sit Jaxson Dart in light of what we’ve seen. The positives, we’ve seen enough positives. We know that we actually have something special brewing. The risks are too great at this point, in light of what the Giants are paying for it. You’re paying these backup quarterbacks, put them out there and give them a chance to continue their careers in the National Football League. I think to those types of front office decisions where is this just about us trying to get a win? So [interim coach Mike] Kafka is in there, you got [GM Joe] Schoen in there, you got hard decisions to make. So sit Jaxson Dart’s behind down, so he can be the future of the franchise.”
The former star receiver thinks that Dart has shown enough promise for the future, but it would be wise for New York to sit him out for the remainder of the year. Tyree also recommended that another fan-favorite backup quarterback be allowed to see the field a few more times to continue his own career.
Tyree Wants Jameis Winston To Play Out The String
Dart has missed time due to a concussion suffered against the Bears, and has now been evaluated for five concussions this season after Sunday’s game against Washington. Fans have been clamoring for the rookie quarterback and the Giants to protect Dart from himself.
The former Super Bowl-winning receiver has been heavy on sitting Dart after seeing Jameis Winston taking the field in his absence. Winston dazzled in two weeks of action, igniting the offense despite gut-wrenching losses to the Lions and Packers. He wants Winston to see the field and allow Dart to gear up for the future.
Tyree said on the podcast, “I’ve personally been heavy on sitting Jaxson Dart ever since I saw Jameis Winston. I think the thought process the Giants had at the beginning of the season was the right game plan. Get a young, talented quarterback in and allow him to actually sit and learn. You have Jameis Winston in there, he actually gave you a good flash, and some revival, some excitement. He’s not just a media frenzy. He’s actually a solid NFL quarterback who can really produce for you.”
In addition to Dart’s swagger, which has revived the energy around the fanbase, he has proven to be able to read defenses well, make plays with his arm and legs, and be highly productive in his rookie season. Winston provides a similar swagger around him and also maximizes the talent of his playmakers. The two quarterbacks are similar in many ways, on and off the field.
Although Giants fans would love to see their prized rookie quarterback suit up through the rest of the season, allowing Winston to continue to do his thing provides a strong compromise: keep excitement on the field while minimizing risk and allowing Dart to rest for his sophomore season.
