Davis Mills Delivers Fitting Message After Texans Take Down Titans

Davis Mills is confident, just as he has always been, following the Houston Texans’ win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 11. The would-be backup quarterback was pressed into starting duties for the second consecutive game.

C.J. Stroud remained in concussion protocol in Week 11.

Judging by Mills’ comments, he could be under center once again when the Texans face the Buffalo Bills on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 12.

In six quarters, Mills has completed 70 of 116 passes (60.3%) for 703 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. He was at his best on Sunday, posting a 274-1-0 line on 63.4% completion against the Titans.

Mills was asked about whether last week’s comeback against the Jacksonville Jaguars added to his confidence.

He said, fittingly, it does not.

“I don’t think it’s any different than I’m kind of treating the whole game. I’ve always been confident. I know what I’m capable of, and that just – it’s a situation in the game that you have to deal with. Knowing, understanding football, and what needs to be done when you’re tied up late in the fourth quarter, you need to go down and get points,” Mills told reporters on November 16.

“So, I was trying to do my best to keep the ball on our side and in our hands, and we were able to go down and make plays.”

For Mills, it was just another day at the office.

Davis ‘Money’ Mills Delivers Again

GettyDavis Mills #10 of the Houston Texans is interviewed following the 36-29 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In Week 10, Mills led the Texans to 26 fourth-quarter points to topple the Jaguars, exacting revenge for a Week 1 loss. Even with that, Mills drew on a lifetime of experience, rather than one game.

He was a third-round pick by the Texans in 2021 and was the team’s starter before the franchise drafted Stroud No. 2 overall in 2023.

Mills has “always” had a “next play” mentality like head coach DeMeco Ryans espouses.

“I don’t think so. I think I’ve always played with that confidence. Like I said, I don’t think the moment, really, is ever too big. I’ve always kind of been able to settle in, and be calm, and focus on what my job is. And when you have guys around you who are making plays and you can lean on and trust in the huddle, it makes it a lot easier,” Mills said. “I don’t know if there’s too much of a process. I think it’s – a lot of it is my natural demeanor. I’ve never been very emotional as a person. Never, kind of, got too upset if something bad happens.

“That’s kind of just how I’ve always been on the field and off the field. Can’t really control the uncontrollables. You just got to focus on what’s next, and what you can do to change the outcome of the game in the best way possible.”

Whatever the reason, Mills has earned the respect of his teammates, with defensive end Will Anderson acknowledging the “Money Mills” moniker.

He’s getting the job done,” Anderson said, per the Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan M. Alexander.

Davis Mills Really ‘Chills’

Mills’ other moniker – “Davis Chills” – stems from his attention-grabbing comments regarding his wife getting upset with him because he does not. His answer to a question about whether he liked playing in “high-pressure moments” spoke volumes.

“Yeah, they’re fun. I think, kind of, everything kind of slows down. The field, the space opens up. And when you can settle in there, and you know exactly what your process is, you know exactly what the play that’s being called is, and you can kind of – especially, late in the game. I’ve seen the defense the whole entire game at this point,” Mills said.

“I know most their calls, their disguises that they’ve already showed. And you can kind of start using the stuff in your mind to anticipate and play even faster.”

Again, fittingly, Mills will not dwell on this win, with the Texans on a short week against the Bills.

“It’s quick,” Mills said when asked how long he would give himself to revel in his feats. “It’s really just today. Watch the film on the plane, get good rest, recover, and then we’re starting tomorrow on the Bills.”

Mills’ comments could prove prescient, amid doubts that Stroud will clear concussion protocol in time to suit up in Week 12, leaving the current QB1 in place for at least another week.
