Shilo Sanders is fighting for a spot on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ roster, but may have picked the wrong fight against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday.
The son of Colorado coach Deion Sanders came into the NFL as an undrafted rookie and has been on the fringe of the roster in Tampa. He had the chance to make a strong final impression against the Bills in Saturday’s preseason finale, but lost his cool after getting engaged with Bills tight end Zach Davidson and ended up getting ejected.
Shilo Sanders Tossed for Throwing Punch
After the Bills scored a first-quarter touchdown to take a 7-0 lead, they were driving toward a score again in the second quarter when Davidson blocked Sanders and stayed engaged with him far beyond the line of scrimmage. Sanders grew frustrated and threw a punch on the play, getting flagged for unnecessary roughness and earning an ejection.
Davidson added some insult to injury, making the “too small” gesture toward Sanders after he had thrown the punch.
Sanders faced some sharp scrutiny for the play, with many questioning why he would lose his cool in such a pivotal game for his hopes of making the final roster.
“Final preseason game of the year, fighting for a roster spot, Shilo Sanders has been ejected for throwing a punch,” noted Barstool Sports in a post on X.
Others close to the Buccaneers saw the play as a final nail in the coffin for Sanders’ hopes of making the final roster.
“Unfortunately I see no way that Shilo makes this team. Even before the ejection,” noted Christopher Mathis of WDAE in Tampa in a post on X.
Sanders had already been penalized for pass interference earlier in the game, marking a rough night for the undrafted rookie.
Shilo Sanders’ brother, Shedeur Sanders, is also facing a fight for a roster spot. The former Colorado quarterback has been fourth on the depth chart with the Cleveland Browns, but did have some impressive performances in the preseason. The Browns have not hinted what they could do, but some analysts have suggested that the team will trade one of its veterans — Kenny Pickett or Joe Flacco — and clear up some room for Sanders to develop.
Zach Davidson Fighting for Roster Spot
Davidson has his own battle to make a roster, with just one spot up for grabs on the tight end depth chart in Buffalo. Former first-round pick Dalton Kincaid is at the top of the list with veteran Dawson Knox behind him, leaving Davidson to compete with a group of others including fifth-round pick Jackson Hawes.
Reporter Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN predicted that Hawes would end up beating out Davidson for the final spot. But she noted that Kincaid and Knox will get the majority of the targets.
“Another secure group for the Bills offense with Kincaid and Knox back for another year, and the rookie Hawes joining in a largely blocking role,” Getzenberg wrote. “This is a big year for Kincaid going into his third season.”
