While it’s far beyond you or me to try and tell an NFL team — a really good one at that — how to run its offense, suggesting the Baltimore Ravens find a way to get wide receiver Devontez Walker some more touches shouldn’t be considered blasphemous.
That’s because after 2 seasons and 11 games, Walker has 3 receptions for 47 yards … and 3 touchdowns — an insane rate of success.
After going without a catch in Baltimore’s season opening loss to the Buffalo Bills, Walker bounced back with 2 receptions for 26 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 41-17 blowout win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 2.
“3 career receptions = 3 career TDs,” the Ravens wrote on their official X account on September 14. “Devontez Walker’s stat line goes crazy.”
The Ravens selected Walker in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft (No. 113 overall) out of North Carolina and he had one reception for one touchdown as a rookie in 9 games — a 21-yard touchdown reception from 2-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson in a Week 15 win over the New York Jets.
NFL Fans Can’t Believe Walker’s TD Rate
Walker’s 2 touchdown receptions against the Browns stirred up quite a bit of buzz online.
“He was Toe-Touch Tez last year… but now he’s Touchdown Tez,” Ravens long snapper Nick Moore said on The Ryan Ripken Show on September 15.
“DEVONTEZ WALKER CAREER STATLINE: 3 CATCHES. 3 TOUCHDOWNS. 100% DEMON,” X user Truzzz wrote on their official X account.
“WR DeAndre Hopkins said he’s Devontez Walker’s biggest fan,” The Baltimore Banner’s Giana Han wrote on X on September 14. “Tez said he and D-Hop have little talks every day, and he doesn’t know if Hopkins knows how much those talks mean to him.”
“We need to stop with the deep balls to Bateman, we have Devontez Walker now,” Ravens fan Temp Know Ball wrote on X. “Let Bateman cook in between numbers where he’s best.”
“Tez is a very hard worker,” Jackson told Ravens reporter Sarah Ellison. “He’s been grinding, and all he needed was the opportunity. He shows up each and every time.”
Walker Went To War With NCAA In 2023
Walker’s football career to this point has been defined by a knock down, drag out fight with the NCAA over his eligibility at the University of North Carolina in 2023.
The problems occurred when he signed with North Carolina Central in 2020 but never played a game for the FCS school when their season was canceled because of the pandemic. He transferred to Kent State and played there for 2 seasons, including an All-MAC selection in 2022 with 58 receptions for 921 yards and 11 touchdowns in 12 games.
Walker transferred from Kent State to North Carolina but was denied immediate eligibility because he was a 2-time transfer. That meant he would have had to sit out the entire 2023 season to play in 2024. The school and Walker took the case to court and he joined the Tar Heels after 4 games.
He finished the season with 41 receptions for 699 yards and 8 touchdowns in just 8 games then cemented his draft stock with some out of this world NFL combine numbers, including a 4.36-second 40 yard dash, 40.5 inch vertical leap and 11-foot-2 broad jump.
