Diamondbacks Could Explore Reunion with Former All-Star: Analyst

The Arizona Diamondbacks could be exploring a reunion with a former All-Star first baseman. The club had a disappointing season after entering 2025 with high expectations. The club struggled to get back to the postseason.

So, the Diamondbacks could be looking to bolster their lineup for next season with an experienced bat. That bat could be former first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.

John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports Radio believes Goldschmidt and the Diamondbacks could be looking to reunite this offseason. He wrote on X:

“I would expect the Diamondbacks to kick the tires on a reunion with Paul Goldschmidt. Goldy, who is 38 years old and coming off a season in which he hit .274 with 10 HR for the Yankees in 146 games, could fit in nicely as a platoon 1B for a year.”

The 38-year-old ended his season with the New York Yankees following the team’s defeat in the ALCS. Goldschmidt didn’t play much down the stretch and into the postseason as the club prioritized Ben Rice at first.

Now, Goldschmidt is set to become a free agent and could be looking for one more shot at the Bigs. Goldschmidt made six All-Star appearances in the Desert. He hit over 200 dingers with the D-Backs before moving on to play with the St. Louis Cardinals and the Yankees.

Unfortunately for Goldschmidt, he’s no longer an everyday player. So, as Gambadoro pointed out, a platoon situation could be on the horizon for the veteran slugger.

Goldschmidt not Retiring Just Yet

One of the biggest question marks surrounding Goldschmidt’s reunion with the Diamondbacks is his potential retirement.

However, insider Jon Heyman dispelled those thoughts back on October 8, posting the following comment on X:

“Paul Goldschmidt said he’d like to keep playing. ‘I love playing,’ he said.”

So, it seems that Goldschmidt would be looking to keep playing at least one more season. That’s why a return to the Diamondbacks could be a fitting way to wind down his career. The D-Backs might be willing to bring back one of the franchise’s most popular players to bid him farewell at some point.

Diamondbacks Could Benefit from Goldschmidt’s Bat

The Diamondbacks had somewhat of a rotation at first this season. Josh Naylor started the year at first, playing 76 games. The club traded him at the deadline, leaving Pavin Smith as the heir apparent to the position.

Smith is a former first-round pick and could be a decent option at first for next season. Still, the Diamondbacks could use a more experienced bat at first. That’s why Goldschmidt could be an interesting first.

Additionally, Smith is a left-handed bat. So, platooning him with the right-handed Goldschmidt could add more balance to Arizona’s lineup. That’s a key consideration, as Goldschmidt could also be a decent bat coming off the bench. Fangraphs currently projects two switch-hitting bats on the club’s bench. So, Goldschmidt could replace Tim Tawa as the team’s primary right-handed bat off the bench.

Ultimately, there’s no telling if the two sides could agree on a deal. But one has to think that at this point in Goldschmidt’s career, returning to Arizona might be the best fit. The Diamondbacks could use his bat, especially if it comes with a team-friendly contract.
