The Los Angeles Dodgers are in a tight division race with the San Diego Padres and are attempting to avoid the National League Wild Card Round by winning the NL West once again. Sitting at 65-47, the Dodgers hold a three-game lead over San Diego, but down the final stretch of the regular season, every series is important.
Every team in baseball at this time of year is dealing with a handful of injuries, but for the Dodgers, it feels like it’s been a revolving door of guys in and out of either the lineup or on the pitching staff.
Tommy Edman Likely Heading to the Injured List
During Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Tommy Edman singled a ball into the outfield, and when he was rounding first appeared to have tweaked something in his leg. He was removed from the game, and the injury diagnosis is in on what the issue is. Edman has been dealing with a slew of injuries all season, including his right ankle. The Los Angeles Dodgers haven’t officially announced the move, but manager Dave Roberts said that an IL stint is “likely,” and it will officially be announced before Monday’s contest against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The corresponding move could be Max Muncy being reactivated from his IL stint, which would also give newcomer Alex Freeland some more time at the big league level playing second base. Muncy’s rehab assignment is essentially complete at this point.
Edman was acquired around a year ago by the Dodgers from the Cardinals, but he will likely not be available against his old team. He won the 2024 NLCS MVP and was such an important piece in their run to the World Series. Edman noted following Sunday’s game that he just stepped on the base a little funky and hopes it’s not a bigger issue.
The 30-year-old utilityman who can play all over the diamond had a torrid start offensively this season and was on the way to having a career year. However, things have slowed down for Edman with the bat. He’s hitting .228 with 12 home runs and 13 doubles. Edman had been slumping, and maybe the IL stint will reset the mental part of his game, but he’s a versatile defender who can play anywhere on the infield at a high level.
Other Dodgers News & Notes
If Muncy is reactivated, that should provide the Los Angeles Dodgers a huge offensive boost, as they have been struggling as of late. They were able to take two of three from the Tampa Bay Rays, but sprinkled in that series was an 18-inning scoreless streak, and it was a series backed by great pitching.
Roberts also gave an update on Hyeseong Kim, who will be out of baseball activities for a few more days. Roberts also indicated that Edman could miss a couple of weeks dealing with the ailment. Edman himself also noted to the media that it’s been a frustrating injury to deal with this season, but hopefully he’s able to make a full recovery, let it fully heal, and be ready for October, if Los Angeles is to make it.
