Dodgers Receive Positive Trade Deadline Grade Despite No Big Splashes

The Los Angeles Dodgers are one of the MLB franchises that are expected to make huge trades every year because of their track record of blockbuster deals and offseason spending. However, at the 2025 trade deadline, Los Angeles remained relatively quiet and, honestly, might have sold more than they added. Despite that, an MLB analyst still gave them a positive deadline grade for their additions.

Los Angeles acquired Brock Stewart from the Minnesota Twins and Alex Call from the Washington Nationals. Stewart has been very efficient against right-handed hitters this season, and Call should be able to see playing time in left field due to Michael Conforto’s struggles.

LA’s most significant move was trading Dustin May to the Boston Red Sox, a semi-shocking move among fans. May had made 18 starts for the Dodgers this season.

What Was the Dodgers’ Deadline Grade?

According to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, the Los Angeles Dodgers received a B+ grade for their moves before Thursday’s deadline:

“The Dodgers decided to both buy and sell at the deadline, acquiring a solid fourth outfielder in Alex Call (119 OPS+) and a veteran reliever in Brock Stewart (2.38 ERA, 1.09 WHIP), who should significantly help their bullpen down the stretch. The trade for Stewart could become one of the best under-the-radar deals of the deadline. I also really liked their pickup of Call because he’s a plus defender with speed and is controllable through 2029. The Dodgers also sold in an effort to build up their farm system, and I liked those moves as well. They always seem to win three-team trades, and I thought they did it again with the acquisitions of High-A lefty Adam Serwinowski and Triple-A righty Paul Gervase, who came over from the Reds and Rays, respectively, in the three-way deal.”

The “sell” Bowden is referring to was the move to trade away Dustin May.

The Dodgers have certainly made bigger moves in the past, but it wasn’t a disastrous trade deadline like some other teams, plus they are getting Blake Snell back on Saturday, and Roki Sasaki is expected to pitch again this season. They will bank on the fact that Michael Kopech and Tanner Scott have returned healthy enough to anchor the bullpen, although Scott has struggled this season.

Dodgers Season Outlook

The Los Angeles Dodgers are not out of the woods just yet in the National League West. They have just a three-game lead over the San Diego Padres, but with the Padres’ many additions, they will be a tough team to beat when the two square off in the remaining two months of the season.

With the pitching getting healthier and healthier, and an avoided scare with Shohei Ohtani being removed from one of his outings just the other day, the Dodgers should be okay on the pitching side. It’s time that the front office and coaching staff decide on Conforto, though, he has struggled tremendously this season and is starting to hold the offense back.

As for Brock Stewart, it will be interesting to see how/when he is used. The Dodgers love to play matchups with their relievers, and Stewart likely won’t be any different. Dustin May had begun to struggle as a starter with a 4.85 ERA, but his 104 innings pitched were essential to the staff.

However, all in all, a B+ deadline grade is fitting and pretty solid for a team that didn’t make any huge splashes.
