The Miami Dolphins are expected to have a new quarterback in the 2026 season following Tua Tagovailoa’s benching. This past Sunday, the Dolphins started rookie seventh-round pick Quinn Ewers, who went 20-for-30 for 260 passing yards and two interceptions. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that “Ewers has a chance to stake his claim to the starting job next season in these three starts.”
When asked about what he wants to see going forward from Ewers, McDaniel said “Growth. You want [last week] to be his least polished game.” On Sunday, Ewers will face off against Tampa Bay, a team that is 24th in the NFL in points allowed per game.
Lamar Jackson Would Love to Play in Miami
Another option for the Dolphins at the quarterback position is two-time MVP Lamar Jackson. A new article by the Baltimore Sun’s Mike Preston suggests that Lamar Jackson’s career has “hit a crossroads in Baltimore.” Preston suggested the Ravens should not offer him a contract extension as he sees “a player whose body is starting to wear down.”
In the article, Preston linked Lamar Jackson to the Dolphins as he said that Jackson, “a South Florida native, would love to play in Miami, where quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is no longer the starter.” Preston suggested that the price for Jackson would be two or three first-round picks. Previously, Lamar Jackson had liked a post on X that showed him photoshopped with a Miami Dolphins uniform.
While the Dolphins could send those draft picks, Lamar Jackson’s salary would complicate the situation, as he’s currently set to be the highest-paid quarterback over the next two seasons. Miami still has to deal with the $54 million guaranteed to current quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in the 2026 season.
The Dolphins have been linked to Lamar Jackson for some time now. Reportedly, during the 2018 NFL Draft, owner Stephen Ross wanted the Dolphins to trade down and select Lamar Jackson, but Adam Gase and Chris Grier did not want to follow that route. The Dolphins ended up drafting Minkah Fitzpatrick and Lamar Jackson went on to become a two-time MVP. Both Adam Gase and Chris Grier were let go by the organization.
Throughout his career, Jackson has made the Dolphins regret passing up on him. Against Miami, Jackson has thrown for 1,405 yards, 18 touchdowns and only one interception.
Current Dolphins Quarterback Situation
For now, it’s Ewers’ job to lose. He has two more games to position himself as Miami’s quarterback of the future. Besides support from members of the staff, his contract also works in his favor as he’s got three more years under contract with the team. Additionally, it seems head coach Mike McDaniel has liked what he’s seen from the rookie quarterback as he recently said “When I say someone gives us the best chance to win, I mean it.” McDaniel also added that Ewers is “a natural for the position and he was ready.”
Ewers will now face a Buccaneers team that has lost six out of their last seven matchups. The Dolphins rookie seventh-round pick is still searching for his first passing touchdown of his career.
