The Miami Dolphins improved to 7-9 after a 20-17 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The win marked the first of rookie Quinn Ewers’ career. The Dolphins’ seventh-round rookie led the way with two passing touchdowns.
His first touchdown pass occurred in the first quarter as he connected with Theo Wease for a 63-yard score. Ewers finished 14-for-22 with 172 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the win. The Dolphins defense was the star of the show as they limited the Buccaneers offense to ten points in the second half.
Bradley Chubb was one of the team’s top performers as he finished with two sacks, including a strip sack in the fourth quarter that proved pivotal in Miami’s win. Additionally, Jason Marshall and Ashtyn Davis intercepted Baker Mayfield as the Dolphins won the turnover battle. The game marked a return to Miami’s winning formula, which had previously resulted in five wins out of six before their two-game skid.
Chop Robinson Suffers Injury
One of the few bright spots in the 2024 season for the Dolphins was the play of first-round pick Chop Robinson. The Dolphins’ rookie finished with six sacks over his final ten games of the season, becoming one of the NFL’s finalists for the Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Unfortunately for Robinson and the Dolphins, his sophomore season did not build on that strong rookie performance. With one week remaining in the season, Robinson has just four sacks in 15 games.
Perhaps worst of all, Robinson has dealt with a pair of injuries. During Miami’s Week 9 loss against the Ravens, Robinson left with a concussion. He was unable to suit up in the following week against the Bills. The Dolphins’ young pass-rusher returned against the Commanders, but has now suffered another concussion. During the game against the Buccaneers, Robinson departed in the second quarter and was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game.
The Dolphins’ second-year player will likely be unavailable for the team’s season finale against the Patriots due to his concussion. Robinson will be missed against New England, as he has caused damage against them in the past. In three career games against the Patriots, Robinson had notched 2.5 sacks.
Dolphins vs Patriots
Next up for the Dolphins is a game against the division rival Patriots. Aside from Chop Robinson, it remains to be seen whether Pro-Bowl alternate Jordyn Brooks will be available for the Dolphins as he left with a hamstring injury in the second half. Brooks had previously dealt with a foot and knee issue, but was able to suit up for the Dolphins.
The Dolphins and Patriots previously faced off in Week 2, which ended in a New England 33-27 win. The Dolphins overcame a 12-0 deficit on that occasion, but gave up a fourth quarter kickoff return touchdown that gave the Patriots a late lead. A Patriots win would clinch the AFC East division title for them, their first since 2019. The Miami Dolphins have not won the division since 2008.
