The Miami Dolphins earned their first win of the Quinn Ewers era after defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20-17. The rookie quarterback went 14-for-22 with 172 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the win.
Ewers is now 1-1 as the team’s starter, posting an 87.2 passer rating this season. Head coach Mike McDaniel praised the performance of his rookie quarterback, as he said, “He’s very calm, cool and collected in the orchestration of the QB position.” Speaking of his own performance, Ewers said, “Experience is always going to help in the QB position. Felt comfortable with the guys, they had confidence in me. I felt very well prepared.”
Dolphins True Feelings on Ewers
Making a quarterback change in the middle of the season is never easy on a team. In the case of the Dolphins, the transition from Tua Tagovailoa to Ewers came after Tagovailoa had been the team’s unquestioned starter all throughout Mike McDaniel’s tenure. Only Jason Sanders, Zach Sieler and Minkah Fitzpatrick had been with the Dolphins in an era where Tagovailoa wasn’t the team’s starter.
In spite of this, it seems the team is embracing the quarterback change. Fox Sports sideline reporter Jen Hale said several players shared with her that they believe Quinn Ewers can be the quarterback to lead the Dolphins into the future. Dolphins wide receiver Theo Wease, who caught Ewers’ first career touchdown pass, said of Ewers, “He’s just a cool guy.”
When Pro Bowl running back De’Von Achane was asked about the rookie quarterback, he said “You can tell his swag in the pocket. He don’t be anxious… he can stay in the pocket and take a hit, that’s something you like about [Ewers], it’s great when throwing when he got a defender in his face.”
Miami’s Future Quarterback
The quarterback role for the Miami Dolphins in 2026 is still up in the air. Palm Beach Post writer Joe Schad said it is unlikely that Ewers will enter the 2026 season as the unquestioned starter, but another strong performance could have him firmly in the mix to earn that job prior to Week 1 next year. Former Dolphins Pro-Bowl left tackle Terron Armstead still believes Tagovailoa will be the team’s starter next year, as he said “Tua is still your starting QB. Week 1 kickoff next year, Tua Tagovailoa is the starting QB.”
A report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter went against Armstead’s belief, as Schefter said the Dolphins are prepared to move off Tagovailoa despite the large cap hit. Unlike Tagovailoa, Ewers will carry a minimal cap hit as his base salary is just above $1 million next season. Whether or not Ewers will be in consideration for the starting quarterback role remains to be seen. The team is still without a general manager as they fired Chris Grier after their 2-7 start to the season. Champ Kelly is currently serving as the team’s interim general manager. Following the Dolphins’ win over Tampa Bay on Sunday, quarterback Quinn Ewers hugged Champ Kelly and pumped his fist as he made his way off the field.
