Dolphins Proposed Trade Flips RB to Chiefs For Draft Capital

The Miami Dolphins’ hopes of turning around the 2025 season took a significant hit against the Carolina Panthers and could therefore make the Dolphins potential sellers at the Nov. 4 trade deadline.

Miami (1-4) has two options at running back to trade — De’Von Achane and Jaylen Wright. Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay broke down why Wright would make the most sense, and Kay proposed that the Dolphins pick up some draft capital by sending him to the Kansas City Chiefs.

In Kay’s proposed trade, the Dolphins receive a 2026 sixth-round pick and only part ways with a running back in Wright, who hasn’t logged many touches in his young career. The price is also right for trade suitors when it comes to a young back on his rookie deal of a four-year, $4.78 million deal.

“While star running back De’Von Achane may be the real prize in Miami’s backfield, his affordable contract, youth and production will likely make him too costly for contenders to land,” Kay wrote. “Backup Jaylen Wright is far more likely to be moved, as he’s fallen out of favor in the backfield and hasn’t lived up to his immense potential since being drafted in Round 4 last year.”

“At his best, Wright is a dynamic playmaker who can make good things happen with the ball in his hands,” Kay added. “He profiles as an equally competent rusher and receiver, a versatile back who could jump-start a flailing ground game for a team that needs some athleticism.”

A Potential Win-Win Trade

Miami could add talent for 2026 with the trade, and the Chiefs get immediate help in the backfield.

While the Dolphins haven’t landed a big-time steal in the sixth round in decades, the team could still find a serviceable player. As for the Chiefs, Wright would add talent to the mix in a running game that’s looking for answers.

“Starter Isiah Pacheco is having a pedestrian campaign, rushing for 127 yards and zero touchdowns on his 32 carries. Backup Kareem Hunt looks washed again following a resurgent 2024 season, averaging just 3.2 yards per carry and finding the end zone just once in 2025,” Kay wrote. “With quarterback Patrick Mahomes leading the team in rushing, Kansas City clearly needs to find a backfield spark.”

“While the cash-strapped contender won’t be able to splurge on a high-profile back, taking a chance on someone like Wright could result in this squad finally getting its rushing attack figured out and help drive yet another Super Bowl run,” Kay concluded.

De’Von Achne Could Still Get Traded Instead

While Wright would be less of a hit to the offense, the Dolphins could get more for Achne and therefore swing a trade with him instead.

The Texas native and former Texas A&M star has been productive since the Dolphins took him with a third-round pick in 2023. He has a career total of 1,969 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns amid an average of 5.4 yards per carry. Achne also has 130 catches for 962 yards and 12 touchdowns for his career.

This season, Achne has 262 yards rushing and a touchdown on 60 carries, and he has 25 receptions for 173 yards and three touchdowns.
