Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa Gets Brutally Honest About Leadership Issues

The Miami Dolphins keep letting opportunities to win football games slip through the cracks and the team’s quarterback is growing frustrated.

The Dolphins erased a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit and took the lead when Tua Tagovailoa connected with Darren Waller for a 1-yard touchdown with 46 seconds left.

However, Justin Herbert evaded Miami’s pass rush and hit Ladd McConkey for a 42-yard catch-and-run in the final moments, setting up Cameron Dicker’s fifth field goal of the game as the Los Angeles Chargers rallied to defeat Miami 29-27 on Sunday.

Tua Says He’s ‘Shocked’ That Dolphins Lost

“Shocked, I guess you could say. This is something that we’ve talked about collectively as a team, about being able to finish in games like this,” Tagovailoa said. “Where we have the opportunity to win the game. And it’s not just one side of ball, (it’s) every phase. I’ve contributed with the turnovers. For us to go out there and have an opportunity to seal that game and then we don’t allow that to happen. That’s just not the way we want to play football and establish what we’ve been talking about throughout OTAs, training camps, and even in our leadership meetings. It’s frustrating to say the least.”

Tua Asks Questions About the Team Plan

Tagovailoa completed 21 of 32 passes for 205 yards and a touchdown but threw his third interception of the game on Miami’s final drive, as the Dolphins (1-5) were booed off the field at Hard Rock Stadium.

“The only place we can go is next week,” Tagovailoa said. “We talk about figuring this out, we talk about getting it together collectively. What are the problems? What are the issues? Are they getting fixed? Are they not getting fixed? Why are they not getting fixed? Or if they’re fixed, how are we not allowing to have it happen again.

“I contributed to that a lot as well with the three turnovers. You can’t do that and expect to win games. But we all gotta look at ourselves.”

Tagovailoa said that linebacker Jordyn Brooks shared a bible verse in the locker room about dealing with adversity. “Grateful, but not content,” Tagovailoa said. “We gotta continue to strive to get better and do things a different way. It has to be different.”

Tua and Waller Connection Still Going

Despite having a relatively quiet game, one story of resurgence for the Dolphins has been Waller, who has caught a touchdown pass in each of the three games he has played this year.

“He’s a baller,” Tagovailoa said. The ball finds him every time in the end zone. The relationship I have with him is the relationship I have with a lot of the guys — the connection. He’s just so much bigger and allows for me to see him a lot earlier.”

“He’s a ballhawk, finds the ball in the end zone.”

Next Sunday, the Dolphins are at the Cleveland Browns.
