Dolphins’ Reset Roster, as Miami Herald’s Kelly Highlights Pressure Points

The Miami Dolphins just wrapped up their preseason business with Dolphins GM Chris Grier having a press conference to discuss the state of the team.

Miami Herald Columnist Omar Kelly and Beat Writer Isaiah Smalls broke it all down in their latest edition of Dolphins in Depth.

The conversation cut straight into Grier’s words, his roster moves and the team’s future.

Grier didn’t do much dancing around the topic, having said the word “reset”.

While many would suggest that is what the Dolphins have been trying to do, Grier also noted his confidence in the current roster, chemistry and that all of it will have to be proved on the football field.

Dolphins Resetting The Roster, Not Foundation

As Omar Kelly highlighted, Dolphins GM Chris Grier owned the word “reset”.

Grier praised the players that were already in the building and pointed to the team’s chemistry.

He also put the responsibility on the roster to prove itself.

The Dolphins have the right mix, now they need to perform.

Omar Kelly locked into that point.

Grier chose his words carefully. Reset doesn’t necessarily mean rebuilding.

That distinction matters.

The Dolphins see themselves being competitive and among the thick of the playoff caliber teams in the AFC.

In addition, Kelly also makes note that the Dolphins have been riding the “Mediocrity merry-go-round.”

In other words, the Dolphins have been average.

Moving forward, the Dolphins will need to find a way to keep their team heading in the right direction.

Kelly made note that the Dolphins would go as far as their offensive line and running game will take them.

Moreover, the health of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa remains a pivotal piece of the team’s success.

Miami needs a fast start to the season if they are to continue their reset and be competitive at the same time.

Cheap Free Agents, Big Pressure

This offseason, Miami leaned toward the cheaper side when it came to their free agent acquisitions.

Kelly highlighted that the Dolphins organization filled holes with bargain signings.

And made it known that cheap deals can often lead to cheap results.

With a series of free agents topping the list, GM Chris Grier will need to wait and see if his strategy pays off.

In addition, Grier knew that the Dolphins roster was still in need of some life.

So, he recently targeted two key areas before his latest press conference.

Cornerback Rasul Douglas was signed along with Grier’s commitment to re-signing offensive lineman Kendall Lamm.

Both moves addressed weak spots that continue to plague the roster.

Even with these moves, Kelly and Smalls still raised some obvious concerns.

Will the current depth at key positions hold up?

Will the strength of this team deliver the goods when needed?

The pressure will fall on many of the Dolphins’ key players to perform this season, and if the Dolphins want to sniff a playoff spot, they must deliver.

The latest edition of Dolphins In Depth can remind fans of some hard truths.

Talk in August doesn’t matter, wins in December, do.

The word reset means nothing without results.

Because this year, words won’t save Miami. Only results will.
