Dolphins Rookie Receives Punishment Decision From NFL

The Miami Dolphins prepare to face the New York Jets on Monday night in a battle of the 0-3’s, where one team (barring an unlikely tie) will break their winless deadlock.

However, after last Thursday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, one Dolphins player has been reprimanded by the league for a hit in which he lowered his helmet.

Rookie running back, Ollie Gordon II received a $5,045 fine from the NFL after lowering his helmet during an 8-yard run on third down that secured the Dolphins a first down inside the Bills’ five-yard line.

“Welcome to the NFL: The league fined [the] Dolphins RB Ollie Gordon $5,045 for unnecessary roughness (use of helmet) on this play last week at Buffalo.” NFL insider, Tom Pelissero wrote.

Miami also received another fine, this one for interior offensive lineman, Aaron Brewer, who had $17,389 taken off his paycheck after a blindside block on Bills defensive end, AJ Epenesa, who was chasing the play.

Whilst $5,045 is hardly an earth shattering amount – for a rookie sixth round pick whose base salary this year is just $840k before taxes, it is certainly an annoyance.

Ollie Gordon II Impressing In His First Season In The NFL

Coming out as a sixth round pick just this past April, most did not believe that the former Oklahoma State man would have much opportunity in his rookie season, sitting behind both De’Von Achane and second year fourth round pick, Jaylen Wright.

However, Gordon has come in and overtaken Wright as the RB2, having first gotten an opportunity to shine as the backup during Wright’s early-season stint on the sidelines recovering from a lower leg injury.

On the season, Gordon has 12 rushing attempts for 50 yards, in addition to 2 receptions for 4 yards in the passing game.

Although those are hardly exceptional numbers by any stretch of the imagination, his role in the offense has slowly started to grow, managing 3/4 of his total season carries last week against the Bills.

What Is The State Of The Dolphins’ Offense Ahead Of Week 4

The Dolphins do not have any “out”, “doubtful” or “questionable” designations on their active roster heading into week 4 against the Jets.

With the tandem of Achane and Gordon proving to be fairly solid, with regards to the ground game; by far the biggest question for Miami’s offense is that of Tua Tagovailoa and the passing attack.

Tagovailoa has put up decent numbers at times over the course of the first three games. However untimely, costly interceptions have resulted in the team being unable to capitalize on profitable situations – like being down 7 at the opponent’s 20 yard line last week in Buffalo, only to be picked off by linebacker Terrel Bernard.

Whether he can get the offense going through the air, and make the most out of his talented wideouts, Jaylen Warren, Tyreek Hill and co., should ultimately determine both his and head coach, Mike McDaniel’s fate going forward.
