Dolphins Sign ‘Standout’ Quarterback Before Patriots Game

The Miami Dolphins will hope to avoid double-digit losses for the first time since 2019 as they take on the 13-3 Patriots on Sunday. Miami lost their previous encounter in Week 2 after blowing a fourth-quarter lead. A sweep by the Patriots would be the first time the Dolphins have been swept by New England since 2016. The quarterback on that occasion for New England was Tom Brady.

Brady now serves as a minority owner for the Las Vegas Raiders, where he helped scout and draft quarterback Cam Miller who was a standout at North Dakota State.

Dolphins Announce Quarterback Move

The Raiders drafted Miller in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, after he was endorsed by Tom Brady. Miller was waived by the Raiders prior to the season, but was then signed to the team’s practice squad. Now, before the Dolphins face off against Brady’s former team, they have announced that they signed Cam Miller to their active roster.

Miller will join a Miami quarterback room that already includes: rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers, Zach Wilson, and Tua Tagovailoa. In Miller’s final year at North Dakota State he threw for 3,251 yards, 33 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Miller finished 45-11 as the team’s starting quarterback and held the school record for total yards, completion percentage, completions, and passing yards.

A scouting report by Gerald J. Huggins of Sports Illustrated described Miller as a quarterback “whose game is defined by good anticipation, functional mobility, and creativity when plays break down.” Anticipation is a tool that often was used to describe former quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the Dolphins, however creativity when a play broke down is an element that was missing from Miami’s offense.

Miller’s role with the Dolphins remains to be seen as the team already announced rookie seventh-round pick Quinn Ewers as the team’s starter for their regular season finale. Cam Miller has yet to play an NFL snap in his career. Miller’s best preseason performance occurred against the Seahawks as he went 6-for-7 with 76 passing yards and a touchdown. Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has served as the team’s emergency third-string quarterback since his benching, but that role could be Miller’s on Sunday.

Dolphins vs Patriots

Miller’s signing will likely have no impact on Sunday, as Ewers will make the third start of his young career. It will mark his final game of his audition for the Dolphins quarterback role in 2026. Speaking on his mindset entering the final game of the season, Ewers said, “The offense embodies the personality of the head coach and quarterback — I just want to instill confidence in each play I announce (in the huddle). I want to speak confidence in them from the very jump.”

Ewers has already impressed in his two starts, as he threw for two touchdowns and no interceptions in last week’s win against the Buccaneers. Additionally, Ewers posted the most passing yards by any rookie quarterback in his debut this season, despite being the 13th and final quarterback drafted in the 2025 NFL Draft. Cam Miller was the 11th quarterback taken.
