The Miami Dolphins are not quite ready for contention, with the roster posing serious questions at cornerback and on the offensive line. And that is even before the volatile health of franchise quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, is bought into question.
Whilst receiver is not top of mind when thinking about the changes that need to be made to the roster, the Dolphins may be wanting to cash in on their 31-year old asset and 5 x All-Pro, Tyreek Hill, before he becomes dead weight on the roster.
Hill had his lowest receiving total since 2019, where he only played 12 regular season games, and his lowest for a full-season since his rookie year back in 2016. Yet, that number still amounted to 959 yards, good for 30th in the NFL amongst all offensive personnel.
And so in this trade proposal, Miami moves Hill to the Washington Commanders, who are dealing with a situation of their own in the form of All-Pro wideout, Terry McLaurin, whose contract is up at the end of the 2025 season.
McLaurin Contract Talks Stalling Paves Way For Possible Trade
McLaurin spoke to the media on Tuesday, stating that the was “pretty frustrated” with the way negotiations have been going with the Commanders regarding him signing a new deal.

“Iâve been pretty frustrated â Iâm not gonna lie,” McLaurin said on Tuesday regarding contract talks with Washington, “Everything that has transpired to this point has been disappointing and frustrating. Iâve wanted to continue my career here. Iâve created my life here, my wife and I bought our first home here so this has been somewhere where I always wanted to be.”
Per ESPN, the team has not engaged in any talks regarding a future deal for the 2 x Pro Bowler over the past two months. And whilst McLaurin does not currently believe that he is at the point of “no return” to the organization, he notes that “time is kind of ticking” with regards to his deal.
Understandably, McLaurin wants a new contract. And although the Dolphins are not in the best cap situation of all time, alleviating the cap hit that would be incurred by Tyreek Hill in 2026 – a number north of $51 million (!!) – would allow them to sign former Ohio State star to a long-term deal without going into a New Orleans Saints style continual impending cap-hell.
Trade Swap Leaves Both Teams With A Bona Fide WR1
Equally, if McLaurin is to be traded the Commanders would be exceptionally reticent to move him without having a finding a cogent replacement to act as Jayden Daniels‘ WR1, particularly in the midst of the former OROY’s critical and cheap five rookie years.
Washington have the sixth most cap space in the league in 2026, right when Hill’s deal gets expensive, at which point they can choose to either extend him or see out the final year of his deal, which will not be fatally punitive to the organization’s financial situation.
So, this feels like a rare win-win scenario for both the Dolphins, and the Commanders if the latter is unable to forge a new contract with their star wideout.
Miami Dolphins get: Terry McLaurin, 2026 seventh rounder
Washington Commanders get: Tyreek Hill, 2026 fifth rounder
