Fresh off the team’s first win of the regular season, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had a heavy heart for his teammate and wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who sustained a serious knee injury.
Hill sustained a dislocated knee during the Dolphins’ 27-21 win over the New York Jets on Monday night. Tagovailoa and Hill have played together since 2022, and Hill has been Tagovailoa’s go-to receiver during that time.
“I would say first and foremost, and I know the guys been hearing me talk about it with them lately in the locker room, we been having a lot of spiritual talks, but I want to thank you my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ first and foremost,” Tagovailoa told reporters on Monday. “My thoughts are out to the guys that got hurt tonight. My thoughts and prayers are also with Reek (Tyreek Hill).”
Tua Tagovailoa Talked With Tyreek Hill
Tagovailoa confirmed he did talk with Hill after the injury and explained the wideout’s demeanor when being carted off. Hill had six receptions for 67 yards, an 11.2 average, before the injury.
“And as you can see on the jumbotron — he was kind of joking,” Tagovailoa said. “That’s just his personality. So he was joking when I came up and talked to him and when a lot of the guys came up and talked to him. That’s just his personality. That’s just who he is. But our thoughts and our prayers are with him.”
Hill is likely expected to miss the remainder of the season. The five-time All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowler has been dynamic and mostly healthy throughout his 10-year career, with 813 receptions for 11,296 yards and 83 touchdowns since 2016.
Tua Tagovailoa Expresses Relief Over Win vs. Jets
Miami’s season hasn’t been a pretty sight with an 0-3 start that began with a 33-8 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Closer losses to the New England Patriots, 33-27, and the Buffalo Bills, 31-21, offered little solace with two AFC defeats coupled with the horrific start.
“But it’s a great feeling that we feel tonight,” Tagovailoa said about the win over the Jets. “Obviously, when you win, that’s in a way one of the best deodorants for what you could be going through. So I would say we’re enjoying it right now, but we just got to find a way to continue to stack those wins in the win column and continue to keep that going throughout the season.”
The Dolphins can do just that next in Week 5 with a Carolina Panthers team (1-3) that just got blown out in New England on Sunday. Miami then has the Los Angeles Chargers (3-1), Cleveland Browns (1-3), Atlanta Falcons (2-2), and Baltimore Ravens (1-3) in the next month.
All four of those teams all lost at least once in the past two weeks and face challenges going forward. It’s not impossible for a 0-3 team to turn it around and make the playoffs, so the Dolphins can still salvage the season despite the slow start and loss of Hill.
Teams that turned it around from 0-3 to make the postseason include the 1981 Jets, 1982 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 1992 Chargers, 1995 Detroit Lions, 1998 Bills, and 2018 Houston Texans. The Dolphins hope to join that list this season.
