Donald Trump was labelled ‘jealous’ after his muted reaction to Carlos Alcaraz winning the US Open went viral on social media.

The final at Flushing Meadows pitted Alcaraz against World No1 Jannik Sinner for the third straight Grand Slam.

And it was the Spaniard who emerged victorious, avenging his Wimbledon final defeat in emphatic style with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sinner.

Alcaraz is now a six-time major champion and will head to the Australian Open later this year with his eyes set on completing the career Grand Slam.

And while it was a scintillating display of ball-striking from Alcaraz, Sunday’s spectacle was, at times, overshadowed by the visiting US President in the stands.

Trump’s presence in New York had already caused the start of the match to be delayed by nearly an hour in order for the necessary security measures to be put in place.

Thousands of panicked fans were still waiting outside Arthur Ashe Stadium as the start time approached, though, with pictures showing long queues snaking around the famous 23,000-seater arena.

And loud boos and jeers could clearly be heard as Trump left his private box to greet the few supporters that had managed to enter the stadium before the action eventually began.

Trump received a similar reaction when he attended the Club World Cup final back in July, when he bizarrely gatecrashed Chelsea’s trophy lift following the side’s defeat of Paris Saint-Germain.

And similar to the Club World Cup, the 79-year-old was also a talking point immediately after the action concluded at the US Open when the cameras panned to show his muted reaction to Alcaraz’s victory.

Tennis great Martina Navratilova was quick to delight in Trump’s reaction, suggesting the US President was jealous that Alcaraz was the centre of attention after his victory.

‘Never saw Trump clap. Not once. He is so jealous!!!,’ she wrote on X.

‘And when the whole place erupted clapping for Bruce Springsteen while playing Born in the USA it was magical!!!’

Fans were also quick to mock Trump’s reaction on social media, with one writing: ‘Lol, he can’t clap for anyone but himself’, while another joked: ‘He definitely had money on Sinner winning.’

Speaking after the final, however, Trump insisted he enjoyed the event and thanked the ‘progressive’ fans for their response to his attendance.

‘I loved it. First of all, the two players have unbelievable talent,’ he said.

‘It just seemed they hit the ball harder than I have ever seen before – incredible talent.

‘I really enjoyed it. I used to go all the time but lately it’s a little bit more difficult to go.

‘They were really nice. The fans were really nice. I didn’t know what to expect. Usually, you would say that was a somewhat progressive crowd but they were great, the fans were great.’

Alcaraz, meanwhile, used his post-match speech to pay tribute to Sinner as the two stars of men’s tennis wrote the latest chapter in their already captivating rivalry.

‘I want to start with Jannik – it’s unbelievable what you have done in the whole season. I see you more than my family!’ he said.

‘It’s great to share everything with you and watch you improve, working hard every day. Congratulations to you.

‘My team, my family – I’m lucky to have you guys. You work hard to make me better and not just professionally but personally too.

‘Every achievement I have is thanks to you. This one is also yours. I’m lucky to have my brother, my uncle and father – my little brother and mother are watching at home. Thank you so much.

‘This is super special for me. The three weeks I spent here are a privilege. I feel at home and feel the energy and love here.’
