In the midst of his fourth season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Donovan Mitchell has continued to play at a high level. The haul the team sent to the Utah Jazz in September of 2022 has proven to be worth it, and then some.
For the first time in his career, Mitchell is making more than 50% of his shots. His first 16 appearances have produced some magical results, and he has the Cavs in the number three spot in the East.
And in the team’s last game vs. the Los Angeles Clippers, he surpassed Kyrie Irving in the made threes list. He did it in just 210 games. Kyrie needed 381 to get to the number.
Up next for Spida will be Mark Price.
Donovan Mitchell Leading Cleveland Cavaliers
Offense has been the name of the game across the NBA at the beginning of the 2025-26 season. Donovan Mitchell has been one of the most impressive players in the league in a campaign where history seems to be being made across the board each and every night.
He knocked in five triples last night to move to #5 on the all-time Cleveland Cavaliers made triples list. One of the most dominant to ever wear the Wine & Gold.
Cleveland is of course not as unstoppable as they were a year ago out of the gates, but Mitchell himself has said that is quite alright. They are learning more from some of their defeats, than they did from the victories they opened last season with.
After a night in which the Cavs superstar poured in 37 points on an impressive 14-22 FG, it’s clear that he has been locked in. Coming back off a win against the Indiana Pacers, they were able to turn it into a streak this time around.
Being able to win a game by 15 points where your starting center and three key reserves aren’t in the lineup is a big deal. Jarrett Allen didn’t suit up. Sharpshooting Sam Merrill was out with a hand injury again. The emerging Craig Porter also did not suit up. Lonzo Ball doesn’t play back-to-backs at this stage, so he also was not out there.
And yet, Evan Mobley was able to do his thing. Darius Garland was moving the ball. De’Andre Hunter was hitting.
Mitchell of course is the anchor behind the success, but the supporting cast is also showing up and that means everything for this team.
Let’s get back into Mitchell passing Kyrie Irving. Proceed to the next section.
Now Introducing Donovan Mitchell, #5 in Made Threes in Cavs History
Kyrie Irving’s time in Cleveland was memorable. He was an All-Star MVP. He helped make Cleveland basketball cool again, enticing LeBron James to return to where it began.
Of course, Irving made the game-winning three-pointer in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals. He’s immortalized in league history and in the city for that one. It’ll never be outdone.
Six great years were spent by Irving in Cleveland. He hit 724 triples and made it to four All-Star games. He displayed the tightest handles in the league, while dropping guys left and right.
It took 170 less games for Donovan Mitchell to pass him in long balls. The game has changed a bit, and Mitchell has also proven himself to be a sniper, whereas Irving had a little more mid-range in his bag.
Nonetheless, this is a moment to appreciate two of the greatest in franchise history. The Cavs SG is just 78 threes away from tying Mark Price now for #4 on the list.
Darius Garland (907) is also on this list, but if Mitchell stays hot like this, he may wind up ahead of his own starting mate down the line.
