The Minnesota Timberwolves have made the Western Conference Finals in each of the last two seasons. They boast an MVP candidate in Anthony Edwards, a four-time DPOTY in Rudy Gobert, and plenty of depth on the wings.
However, in a loaded Western Conference, the Timberwolves aren’t seen as a true threat to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Granted, the Wolves lost more this summer than they added, although they continue to add experience around their superstar.
Last summer, in a savvy move, Minnesota flipped Karl-Anthony Towns for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and draft capital. DiVincenzo had been a pillar of the New York Knicks’ newfound success, although he is quickly maximizing his role in Minnesota.

How Donte DiVincenzo Imporved This Offseason
DiVincenzo is the best catch-and-shoot threat on the team, a capable defender, and the rare player who doesn’t mind coming off the bench, even after serving as a starter earlier in his career.
He has played next to Giannis Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry, and Jalen Brunson. Edwards is by far the best player on the team, and DiVincenzo knows it. Luckily for the Timberwolves, he doesn’t mind using his talents to maximize better players.
“Just being able to do different stuff, being able to handle the ball more, being able to create,” he outlined as areas of focus.
He averaged only 3.7 assists last season, although he mainly served as a shooting threat. With Nickeil Alexander-Walker off the roster, he will have to step up as a facilitator.
“I like to say my job is trying to make it as easy as possible for Ant and Julius, but also everybody else,” he added. “And if everybody has that mindset, then across the board, you’re going to have even shots, even points. Obviously, you have our main two guys that we can go to at any point.”
Between DiVincenzo, Mike Conley, and Rob Dillingham, the Wolves have plenty of players who can put their stars in a position to succeed.
Expectations for Timberwolves Are Sky High
Edwards is only getting better, which means the team must continue to improve around him. Conley and Gobert are aging, and the Wolves don’t have the draft capital to wheel and deal.
DiVincenzo has a versatile skillset, but Minnesota needs more than just him to step up.
After finishing second in the West each of the last two seasons, despite a disappointing regular season last year, the Wolves are desperate to punch a ticket to the Finals with this core.
If their wings can play solid defense and set the stars up for scoring success, then the Wolves should remain in the upper tier of Western Conference superpowers.
