Following a hard-fought loss to Max Holloway on Saturday, Dustin Poirier laid his gloves in the center of the Octagon and rode off into the metaphorical sunset.
Now, less than a week removed from his final fight, Poirier has shared an emotional “Letter to the Game” with fans via social media.
In the post, which is sure to leave fight fans teary-eyed, Poirier reflected on growing up in the fight game from a young age, and chasing his dream:
“Letter to the game, Thank you for allowing a kid to chase a dream. Thank you for the lessons. Thank you for the heartbreak. Thank you for a platform to raise others up.
“When I started I wanted to find out how good of a fighter. I can be, and I found out. Fighting is life, Fighting is the truth. I’m forever grateful to have walked this path and the lessons l’ve learned will be with me until my heart stops.
“I’m not sure what’s next but l’ll do what you taught me, continue to walk confidently into the unknown.”
Dustin Poirier Reflects on Career
Before joining the UFC in 2010 following Zuffa’s acquisition of World Extreme Cagefighting, the early days of Dustin Poirier’s career were chronicled in Fightville, a documentary that also followed eventual Ultimate Fighter season 7 cast-member Tim Credeur.
Now, following his retirement, Poirier reflected on his career while speaking with Ariel Helwani on Tuesday’s installment of The Ariel Helwani Show.
During the episode, the two spoke about Poirier frequently saying throughout his career that he was going to, quote, “find out” how far he could make it in the fight game.
“I’ve always kind of been a realist with this. Even that phrase, ‘I’m gonna find out,’ I wasn’t saying, ‘I’m going to f*** everybody up,’ or, ‘I’m going to be undefeated, undisputed.’
“I just knew this was a tough road I was about to go on and I’m going to find out what’s going to happen. I’m going to find out how far I can go, how far I can push.”
Poirier Announces New Documentary Years in the Making
After having the early portion of his MMA career documented in Fightville, Dustin Poirier has now announced that a new documentary will give fans a behind-the-scenes look at his career from start to finish.
During his appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show on Tuesday, he dished on the project:
“This is going to be a full story. You have the beginning of my WEC, UFC career, the entry into that, and now you’re going to have the close of this. I’m thankful my son, my daughter, and future grandkids will have a piece of my life on film that’s going to last forever.”
“The end products is is going to be a a true real story unfiltered. You’re going to see who I really am behind the scenes and I’m proud of that.”
While no official release date has been set, Poirier is expecting a mid-2026 release for the doc.
