But he still has not had a kick for England, despite the Three Lions being held to a 1-1 by Denmark on Thursday.

England looked like they needed something else up top but Southgate did not turn to the 22-year-old hotshot.

Following the full time whistle, the TV cameras followed boss Southgate as he made his way around the pitch to shake hands with both his players and the Danes.

However, it seemed that Palmer could barely even look his manager in the eye when he attempted to shake his.

And it did not take long for fans to comment on the awkward scenes on social media.

One fan said: “Doesn’t look great…”

Another said: “He wasn’t even looking at all my boy is p****d.”

A fellow fan said: “Cold. Southgate didn’t match the aura.”

A fourth said: “’Well I don’t blame him.”

While a fifth added: “I’d be p****d too.”

Meanwhile, more fans accused Southgate of ‘lacking respect” for the ex-Man City attacker.

Another post read: “The right reaction… let him know dead on he lack respect for his game.”

While another commented: “I don’t blame him. Who wouldn’t be p****d?”

Palmer is yet to make an appearance at Euro 2022 after he was also an unused sub in the 1-0 win over Serbia.

England now need at least a point from Tuesday’s clash with Slovenia to ensure their passage to the knockout stage.

And Southgate is hoping that his side can produce a performance that he knows they are capable of in four days time.

He said: “We understand people will be disappointed with the performances and rightly so – we have to make them a lot better.

“At the moment we’re not using the ball well enough and have to accept if you do that you will suffer at times, as we have.

“We know there’s another level we have to find.

“There’s a huge amount of work to do, that’s evident from the two performances we have given – clearly it was not what we would’ve hoped for.

“We’ve played teams that are quite fluid in a back three and it’s not easy to get pressure on them but we definitely have to do better than we have done in these two matches, that has been part of the problem – but also not keeping the ball well enough.”
