I’m running out of adjectives to describe this latter-season melt down by the Philadelphia Eagles. Monday night they lost their third straight game in cataclysmic fashion to the L.A. Chargers, 22-19 in overtime. It’s not that hard to find the common thread in all three losses of the current three game losing streak. Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Nine in the last three games and an 0-3 record to reflect that. Jalen Hurts had thrown two interceptions all year prior to tonight’s game. He threw four against the Chargers. In fairness they weren’t all his fault.
What was his fault was a 21/40 performance in which he threw for 240 yards but looked completley flummoxed for most of the night, posting a qb rating of 31.2, his lowest since the regular season finale in 2023, a 27-10 loss to the Giants, when he posted a 26.8 rating.

Brown Was Bad
A.J. Brown finished with 100 yards for the third straight week on six receptions but he had one of his worst nights as an Eagle. He dropped a bomb on the first play of the game, he dropped a ball in the third quarter that resulted in an interception, and he dropped a beautifully thrown would-be touchdown in the fourth quarter which would have given the Birds a seven point lead versus three, which gave the Chargers a much better chance to tie the game on their last series in regulation, which they did.
Kudos to the Eagles pass rush as they sacked Justin Herbert seven times but it still wasn’t enough to overcome all of the penalties and miscues that once again, came back to bite this wayward football team.
Saquon Barkley showed signs of life as he rushed for 122 yds on 20 carries including a 52 yard homerun early in the fourth quarter that gave the Eagles their first lead of the game, 16-13.
The Birds’ defense did their part as they kept Herbert’s arm in check most of the night, holding him to a paltry 12/26 for 129 yds performance but couldn’t keep the Chargers’ feisty leader, who was playing with a broken bone in his non-throwing hand, from gashing them with his legs, carving out 66 yards on 10 carries, which led his team in rushing.
Returned Gifts
Even the occasional fortuitous gift this Philly team recieves from time to time goes to the boneyard. With ten seconds left in the first half Herbert got hit and threw a pop fly that Eagles’ cornerback Adoree Jackson came down with at the Chargers 45 yard line. The Chargers were also flagged for a personal foul on the play. But Jake Elliott missed a 48 yard field goal at the first half gun and the Birds went into the half-time locker room down 10-6 instead of 10-9. It was the third straight game that another crucial missed field goal or extra point by Elliott has come back to haunt this team.
Five turnovers all told for Hurts, two on one play alone, including the game-winning pick by the Chargers Tony Jefferson at the L.A. two yard line in overtime to secure the win for the Chargers and seal the fate of the Eagles, who drop to 8-5 on the year. The Birds host the Las Vegas Raiders next Sunday at the Linc.
