Eagles DC Vic Fangio Sends Bold Message to Cornerbacks Battling for Starting Spot

For the most part, the Philadelphia Eagles roster is in good shape heading into the 2025 campaign. One of the starting jobs that is up for grabs is the team’s No. 2 cornerback, and with the competition coming down to the wire, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio decided to offer his thoughts on what he’s seen so far.

The Eagles already have Quinyon Mitchell manning down one side of the field at cornerback, with Cooper DeJean acting as the team’s nickelback. That leaves the second boundary cornerback position there for the taking, and with nobody firmly establishing themselves as the frontrunner for the job, Fangio sent a strong message to the group of players competing for the gig.

Vic Fangio’s Message to the Eagles Cornerback Room

The Eagles managed to win Super Bowl LIX for several reasons, but one of the more overlooked developments was their young secondary’s ability to shut down the passing game of their opponents. Leaning on rookies like Mitchell and DeJean was a risk, but it panned out, and Philly ended up hoisting the Lombardi Trophy when all was said and done.

Early in the offseason, the Eagles decided to release veteran cornerback Darius Slay, who started alongside Mitchell last season. They never truly replaced him, though, instead opting for a competition at cornerback during training camp. Adoree’ Jackson and Kelee Ringo seemed to be the frontrunners for the starting job, but the front office’s decision to trade for Jakorian Bennett from the Las Vegas Raiders added a bit more intrigue to the situation.

With the regular season quickly approaching, nobody has managed to win this job just yet. While Fangio could view that as a negative, he instead views it as a testament to how fierce the competition has been, while also reminding the team’s cornerbacks that the job is still right there for the taking.

“They’re close,” Fangio said when speaking about Philadelphia’s cornerback competition. “Usually, it does become pretty obvious to everybody as to who’s gonna win the job. That hasn’t happened yet. I think they all have done a good job in and of their own way, had good moments, not so good moments. So, we haven’t reached that conclusion yet.”

Eagles Face Tough Decision on No. 2 Cornerback

Philadelphia Eagles

Mitchell Leff | Getty Cornerback has become one of the most hotly contested position battles on Philadelphia Eagles coordinator Vic Fangio’s defense this summer.

Of the position battles on the Eagles roster, the No. 2 cornerback is easily the most competitive of the bunch. There are reasons for each of Jackson, Ringo, and Bennett to start, but to this point, none of them have managed to stand out in the eyes of the coaching staff. There’s still time for that to change, and Fangio is counting on that happening.

For now, these guys are going to keep on battling, but at some point, a final decision is going to have to be made. Fangio isn’t ready to make that call just yet, but when they do finally pick their starter alongside Mitchell, it’s clear it could play a big role in determining just how effective the entire defense ends up being in 2025.
