Eagles Get Good News on Injured RB Will Shipley Ahead of Week 3 Game

The Philadelphia Eagles received a dose of good news Thursday ahead of their Week 3 game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Running back Will Shipley was listed as a limited participant in practice, his first work on the field since injuring his oblique in the season opener.

Shipley’s participation opens the possibility of a return this week. At the very least, he is trending in the right direction as the Eagles seek a 3-0 start.

What is Will Shipley’s Injury?

Shipley, 23, played just five offensive snaps against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1 before exiting with an oblique injury. The second-year back was unable to practice last week ahead of Philadelphia’s Super Bowl rematch with the Kansas City Chiefs and also missed Wednesday’s session.

Veteran A.J. Dillon handled No. 2 duties behind Saquon Barkley, with newly acquired Tank Bigsby working on kick return. Dillon had three carries for 19 yards, while Barkley (22 carries, 88 yards) and quarterback Jalen Hurts (nine carries, 15 yards) both ran for touchdowns.

The Eagles beat the Chiefs 20-17 to improve to 2-0 for the third time in the last four seasons.

Shipley, a 2024 fourth-round pick, ran 30 times for 82 yards and caught four passes for 35 yards as a rookie. He had another four carries for 77 yards and a touchdown in the NFC title game against the Washington Commanders.

Shipley’s impressive performance in the preseason opener (48 yards rushing on seven carries) set him up to play a key role in the Eagles’ backfield as a change-of-pace option on third down. Last year’s No. 2 back, Kenneth Gainwell, signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency.

What Other Injuries Do the Eagles Have?

In addition to Shipley, tight end Dallas Goedert (knee) and quarterback Tanner McKee (right thumb) were limited participants Thursday, while defensive tackle Jalen Carter (shoulder) practiced in full.

Goedert, 30, did not play against Kansas City after hurting his knee in Week 1. He led the team with seven catches for 44 yards.

Carter returned from his early ejection to record two tackles and one tackle for loss in his first full game this season.

The Eagles host the Rams Sunday (1 p.m. ET) in a rematch of their 2025 NFC divisional win.
