Eagles Insider Reveals Potential Good News for Embattled Playcaller

The Philadelphia Eagles might be 9-5 and comfortably leading the NFC East, but it hasn’t been smooth sailing for them throughout the season. The defending Super Bowl champs have gone through multiple multi-game losing streaks, limping to their current record that sees them third in the NFC playoff bracket, but just sixth in overall record.

One person who has come under fire for Philadelphia’s struggles in new offensive coordinator and playcaller Kevin Patullo. After the Eagles won the Super Bowl last season, then-OC Kellen Moore took the Saints‘ head coaching job, and Eagles HC Nick Sirianni promoted Patullo from passing game coordinator to the full offensive coordinator position.

On the season, the Eagles rank 22nd in both total offense and EPA success rate per play on offense, a far cry from the efficiency and production that unit has enjoyed over the last several seasons. There is a lot of blame to go around, but Patullo has taken the brunt of the criticism, as this Philadelphia offense is employing largely the same personnel it did a year ago when it won a title.

NBC’s Eagles insider, Reuben Frank, released a column on Friday highlighting some of his Eagles observations heading into the final three weeks of the regular season. One of them concerned Patullo amid speculation that Sirianni would look to move on after the season, barring a massive turnaround in the closing weeks.

Frank doesn’t think that’s a given, however. He mentioned that if Sirianni really wanted to make a change, he likely would have done so already. Additionally, he cited Patullo’s improvement in recent weeks as a positive sign, and also that Eagles QB Jalen Hurts has had seven playcallers in seven seasons — a tough thing for a quarterback to manage.

“Hurts has been so vocal about how challenging it is starting over every year with a new play caller every year and how much he would like some consistency in that role,” Frank said. “He even talked about how lucky the offensive linemen have been to have Jeff Stoutland every year they’ve been here and how much he would love to have a similar luxury”

“There’s something to be said for giving Hurts that continuity he craves,” Frank continued. “The one time he had a coordinator for a second year he was an MVP candidate and went to the Super Bowl. Patullo isn’t Steichen, but if he shows enough growth in the role late in the season and most importantly in the playoffs he could find his way back here.”

The Philadelphia Eagles Can Lock Up the NFC East This Week

Despite all the internal turmoil, the Eagles can lock up both a playoff bid and the division this weekend against the Commanders. Any win in their final three games will secure the NFC East for the Eagles.

It starts against the Commanders, though Philadelphia does have two more chances — against the Bills and then a rematch with the Commanders.
