Eagles Safety Marcus Epps Punished by NFL After Win Over Raiders

The Philadelphia Eagles set a modern NFL record with a 31-0 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 15 in which they became the first defense of the Super Bowl era to hold a team under 100 yards of total offense in a regular season game.

With that kind of domination, there’s probably going to be some collateral damage.

The NFL’s GameDay Accountability unit figured out what that was on Saturday, December 20, doling out a $6,500 fine to Eagles safety Marcus Epps for illegal use of the helmet.

Epps, 29 years old, is in the first season of his second stint with the Eagles. He was a sixth round pick (No. 191 overall) by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2019 NFL draft.

Epps has played in 10 games for the Eagles this season with 2 starts.

It’s the second time Epps has run afoul of the NFL’s watchdogs in his career following an unnecessary roughness fine for $11,817 while he was playing for the Raiders in a 2024 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Epps’ Determination Brought Him Back to Philly

Epps, who starred at the University of Wyoming from 2014 to 2018, had to work his back from a career-threatening ACL injury in an early-season loss while playing for the Raiders in 2024.

“Epps had surgery soon after the injury and following a long recovery signed with the Patriots in March (2025),” NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Reuben Frank wrote on December 18. “But they released him after training camp, and that’s when he came back to Philly, where he first spent 3 ½ years from the middle of 2019 through 2022. He started out on the practice squad, played special teams for nine weeks, then spent a month on IR. But with Drew Mukuba injured and Sydney Brown struggling, Vic Fangio turned to Epps to start against the Chargers as soon as he came off IR.”

Epps started all 17 regular season games for the Eagles in 2022 on the way to a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.

“During his first run in Philadelphia, Epps totaled 208 tackles, three interceptions, 15 passes defensed, and a forced fumble,” Heavy.com’s Ethan Woodie wrote on December 4.

He signed a 2-year, $12 million free agent contract with the Raiders in March 2023 and started all 17 regular season games that year as well.

Epps has looked sharp in his 2 starts the last 2 weeks.

“Marcus Epps had a pretty solid game (against the Chargers) & I’m all for keep him on the field and staying away from Sydney Brown,” Eagles Scout Room wrote on X on December 10.

Mukuba Hurt in Breakout Rookie Season

Mukuba getting hurt was a heartbreaker after the 2025 second round pick (No. 64 overall) started 10 of 11 games for the Eagles and had 46 tackles, 2 interceptions, 3 pass deflections and 3 TFL before he fractured his ankle in a Week 12 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

“Eagles rookie safety Andrew Mukuba suffered an ankle fracture that will require surgery, per sources,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler wrote on his official X account on Monday, November 24. “Mukuba — who has stood out in Philly’s secondary — is working through next steps, but his season is in jeopardy.”
