The Philadelphia Eagles may have won Super Bowl LIX last season, but you wouldn’t be able to tell based on all the roster moves they have been making. Over the past few months, the Eagles’ front office has been quite busy when it comes to swinging deals, and that has carried into the 2025 campaign.
Earlier this week, Philadelphia pulled off a surprising trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars for running back Tank Bigsby. That wasn’t the end of their roster makeover, though, as the team tinkered with their practice squad on Wednesday, reuniting with one of their former defensive tackles, while also releasing a second-year cornerback for the second time this season.
Eagles Sign Jacob Sykes, Release Eli Ricks
Having depth on the practice squad is key, even if you don’t necessarily intend on using the players who find their way onto it. With that in mind, the Eagles decided to reunite with defensive lineman Jacob Sykes, but the move resulted in them moving on from defensive back Eli Ricks once again.
Sykes didn’t hear his name called in the 2023 NFL Draft, but he ended up finding his way to the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent. Sykes didn’t make the Seahawks’ roster, so he ended up spending time with the San Antonio Brahmas in the United Football League. That led to him earning himself a deal from Philadelphia this offseason, and while he didn’t make the 53-man roster, he’s got a spot on the team’s practice squad now.
Ricks also went undrafted in 2023, and he’s spent the past two seasons with the Eagles. He was waived during roster cuts, but he quickly returned as a member of the team’s practice squad. However, Ricks now been cut from the practice squad, leaving his future with Philadelphia up in the air for the time being.
“The Eagles signed defensive tackle Jacob Sykes to the practice squad and released cornerback Eli Ricks from the practice squad,” the team announced on its official website.
Eagles Turn Their Attention Towards Week 2 Matchup with Chiefs

The Eagles haven’t been shy when it comes to constantly changing the makeup of their practice squad, and heading into Week 2, they want some extra depth along their defensive line rather than in their secondary. For now, that means Sykes will be on the practice squad, and while Ricks is currently without a home, that doesn’t necessarily mean his time in Philadelphia is over.
Philadelphia did well to kick off its Super Bowl defense with a victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1, but they have some work to do in order to get back to the level it was at down the stretch last year. Picking up a victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in their Super Bowl rematch in Week 2 would certainly help, and that’s exactly what the team will be looking to accomplish when they take the field next.
