Outside of the things you can’t teach, which are God-given gifts like size and speed and athleticism, the one thing the greatest NFL defensive tackles of all time have in common is a nasty streak.
They didn’t call him “Mean” Joe Greene for fun. Aaron Donald struck fear in his opponents. Warren Sapp was as nasty as they come.
Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter could be one of those players, and if the greatness aspect hasn’t been achieved yet … the nasty streak is already firmly in place.
The latest tiff around Carter came in a 13-12 Week 17 win over the Buffalo Bills in which 6-foot-8, 311-pound offensive tackle Spencer Brown said Carter, 6-foot-3 and 314 pounds, intentionally poked him in the eye.
It could also end up putting Carter, a 2-time Pro Bowler, in the NFL’s crosshairs once again.
“Brown was injured late in the game after being poked in the eye by star Eagles defensive lineman Jalen Carter,” Heavy.com’s Nathan Dougherty wrote on December 28. “A replay showed that Carter also appeared to grab Brown across the throat during the play, though no penalties were called. Brown was seen jawing with some Eagles players after the Bills lost 13-12, later telling reporters that he believes Carter intentionally hit him in the eye. That could put the Eagles star in danger of facing further punishment from the NFL.”
Jalen Carter No Stranger to NFL Punishment
Carter was at the center of one of the more bizarre moments in an NFL regular season opener in league history in 2025, when he was ejected from a Week 1 game against the Dallas Cowboys before playing a single snap.
Following the opening kickoff, Carter spit on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and was fined a whopping $57,222 for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The NFL handed Carter his second fine of the year on September 27, hitting him for $11,593 for taunting in a Week 3 game against the Los Angeles Rams.
One video of the incident against the Bills seems to clearly show Carter jabbing his right thumb into Brown’s eye.
“Jalen Carter eye gouges Spencer Brown — doesn’t get much dirtier than this,” Babel Hodl wrote on X.
Carter Made Game-Changing Plays Against Bills
If you’re going to give a game MVP award for the win over the Bills, it probably should go to Carter as well as whatever else might come his way.
After missing the previous 3 games following minor surgery on both shoulders, Carter returned against the Bills with 1.0 sack, 1 TFL, 1 pass deflection and blocked an extra point that ended up being the difference in the game.
Carter was arguably the best player on the Eagles’ defense last season as he was named NFL All-Pro for the first time and helped lead Philadelphia to its second Super Bowl win in franchise history.
The Eagles could secure the No. 2 seed in the NFC Playoffs with a win over the Washington Commanders in Week 18.
“Jalen Carter is such a beast,” The Liberty Line’s Steven Conrad Jr. wrote on X. “Still can’t believe the gold standard of an NFL franchise STOLE him in the draft. Shoutout to the other 31 NFL teams.”
