Eagles Waive Former First Round Pick from Injured Reserve

The Philadelphia Eagles haven’t exactly dominated to begin the 2025 campaign, but they have done enough to pick up a pair of challenging victories over the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs. While their roster appears to be one of the best in the league, the front office is continuing to tinker with it on a near-daily basis.

On Monday, one day after the Eagles’ victory over the Chiefs, the front office decided to make a move involving former first-round cornerback Lewis Cine. While Cine has spent the first two weeks of the season on injured reserve, Philadelphia made a unique decision that could allow him to return to the field in the near future.

Eagles Waive Lewis Cine from Injured Reserve

Cine was selected with the No. 32 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, but he has not come particularly close to meeting the expectations that come with being a first-round draft pick. After playing just 10 games in his first two seasons with the Vikings, they opted to release him in a surprising move.

For most of the 2024 campaign, Cine spent time with the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad, appearing in just one game for the team. In January, the Eagles came in and scooped Cine off the Bills’ practice squad, and while he didn’t suit up for the team in the postseason, he did end up winning a Super Bowl ring when Philly took down Kansas City in Super Bowl LIX.

Over the summer, Cine seemed to be making a charge for a roster spot, but his momentum was derailed when he got injured in the team’s preseason finale. The team waived Cine, and once he went unclaimed, they ended up placing him on injured reserve. After taking down the Chiefs again, though, the Eagles waived Cine again, indicating that he could be healthy after dealing with another injury issue.

“Cine popped up on the NFL transaction wire on Monday, as Philadelphia waived Cine off the injured reserve list, meaning the defensive back could be healthy and ready to sign with another team,” Glenn Erby wrote for Eagles Wire.

Cine was always a flier for the Eagles, and while they would have liked to tap into the potential that made him a first-round pick, things simply did not pan out for him. Now, he will have a shot to latch on with another team in free agency, although given his track record in the NFL, there’s no guarantee he will have many suitors.

As for Philadelphia, they will ride on into Week 3 looking to continue their winning ways. Things won’t be getting any easier for them, though, as they will take on the 2-0 Los Angeles Rams in Week 3. With kickoff being scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, fans will be hoping to see a more dominant performance from the Eagles, but with another tough game on the horizon, the team may have to simply focus on grinding out another hard-fought victory.
