Pep Guardiola has stuck by his decision to name James Trafford in goal after his error in Manchester City’s defeat at Tottenham as Ederson watched on glumly from the bench.

Spurs sealed a 2-0 victory at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon with Thomas Frank extending his superb start to life in north London.

Brennan Johnson gave the visitors the lead after 35 minutes, finishing smartly from Richarlison’s cross having broken the offside trap.

Spurs were gifted a second just before half-time with Trafford inexplicably opting to pass to his teammate in his own box with Spurs players lying in wait.

Trafford’s pass to Nico Gonzalez was pounced upon by Pape Sarr with Palhinha eventually firing home.

Spurs fans were also convinced the former Burnley goalkeeper should have been sent off for a challenge on Mohammed Kudus moments after their side’s opener.

Tottenham’s second right before half-time deflated City with regular no1 Ederson seen watching on unimpressed from the substitutes bench.

Ederson missed last week’s opener against Wolves through illness but was available for Saturday’s clash.

The Brazil international has received an offer to leave City from Turkish giants Galatasaray, with the Premier League giants considering a move for Gianluigi Donnarumma in the event of Ederson leaving.

Guardiola was quizzed on his decision to stick with Trafford ahead of Ederson in his post-match press conference.

He told reporters: ‘No, James had a good first game and we decide to continue [with him].

‘I take the decisions usually in the first part of the season just for the keeper. Goalkeeper is a special position of course to have more consistency in the goal.

‘But for other players when you play one or two games, people think “okay, this is the starting line-up, the player who will play.

‘But I learn for many years there is a lot of games to play and today I decided that.’
