Emotional Meaning Behind Black Ribbons at 3M Open

Oftentimes, the world of golf goes much deeper than shots and scores. At this year’s 3M Open, it did just that. Many players are sporting a black ribbon pinned to their hat or shirt with the initials ‘KH’ displayed in white. That ribbon is for Kayla Hale, the late wife of Cody Hale. She died in mid-July at age 38 after battling cancer.

Cody Hale is well-known throughout the sport. As a longtime Odyssey Tour Rep, Hale is one of the best putter-fitters in golf, and has clearly left an impact on those he works with. Pros like Rickie Fowler understand the importance of showing their support and respect for Hale and his two children by donning the ribbon at TPC Twin Cities this year. In the past Fowler has used an Odyssey putter, and has trusted Hale’s expertise when it comes to the game. He explained why the black ribbon held such high importance.

“I’ve known Cody for a handful of years,” Fowler said. “He’s helped me quite a bit on putters. … Cody’s part of the family out here, and when you’re part of the family, their family is part of the family, too. You can’t really imagine what they’re going through, him and his boys.”

Other notable players pinning on the black ribbon in support of the Hale family include first-round leader Adam Svensson. Svensson, who shot the course record on Thursday with an 11-under 60, spoke about the ribbons and the Hale family.

“Yeah, I’ve known Cody for a couple years now. It’s very tragic what happened. Just something to know that we’re here for him.”

Raising Money for the Hale Family

Friends, family, and fans have since joined together in support of the Hale family, with a Gofundme raising over $100,000 in donations to support Cody and his two young boys as they take the time they need and care for each other. In the fundraiser, organized on behalf of Hale, asks for love and prayers as they endure this unimaginable loss.

“Most importantly, we ask that you keep this sweet family in your prayers. If you are unable to give financially, please join us in lifting them up in love and prayer during this incredibly difficult time.”

Final Round of the 2025 3M Open

After making the cut at the 3M Open, Fowler and Svensson are set to tee off today, no doubt supporting the black KH ribbon as a nod to Cody Hale and his family. Today signifies a chance for Fowler to secure his spot at the FedEx Cup Playoffs and move toward better days. After a disappointing slump that seems never-ending, today could be a much needed shift in momentum for Fowler. He starts the day off T30.

Svensson is looking to score his 2nd PGA Tour win this weekend, having his lone win at the RSM Classic back in 2022. After setting the course record on opening day, he now sits T30 to start the final round of the 3M Open.
