It meant England avoided Netherlands, who finished third in their group which was won by Austria over France.

England topped Group C with one win and two draws.

They beat Serbia thanks to Jude Bellingham’s winner in their Euros opener before being held by Denmark and Slovenia.

England play Slovakia on Sunday in Gelsenkirchen and will do so without Phil Foden, who has rushed back to the UK for the birth of his child.

Anthony Gordon will be vying to replace Foden on the left after coming on against Slovenia.

And the Newcastle winger – who finally got some minutes in Germany – admitted England must improve.

He said: “I think our aim was was to make a statement and sort of correct the performance we’ve had in the past two games.

“I still think we’re in that place. I think we’ve still got to do better I just think we can do so much better. That’s the problem.

“We’ve got such good players. In training, we’re so good every day. We do everything right. And then it’s just not clicking.

“Hopefully in the coming games it will because we need to start really attacking teams and dominating games.
