Team Europe has unveiled its 2025 Ryder Cup roster; one that speaks volumes about the value of experience, chemistry, and consistency. Captain Luke Donald opted for familiarity, reselecting 11 of the 12 members of Europe’s triumphant 2023 squad in Rome. The only newcomer is Rasmus Højgaard, stepping in for his twin brother, Nicola.
This decision shows a clear emphasis on continuity–a calculated strategy aimed at preserving the rhythm and cohesion that secured victory two years ago. Europe enters Bethpage Black in New York (September 26-28) armed with a roster rich in Ryder Cup pedigree.
“It [an away Ryder Cup] is a different animal and it’s a different challenge,” Donald said. “Obviously having the chance to do it again doesn’t mean we’re going to do the same things we did in Rome. That’s about implementing new techniques. I’ve really tried to look hard at exactly what this will require.”
A Blend of Veterans and a Rising Talent
Europe’s final 12-man lineup is a mix of automatic qualifiers and carefully chosen captain’s picks:

Rahm’s inclusion resonates deeply: despite being just 24th on the Ryder Cup points list due to his move to LIV Golf, his track record (6‑3‑3 in Cup matches, including 2‑0‑2 in Rome) made him a near certainty.
“[Donald] has given us the tools we need, but we are all very different personalities, and some people in the world of sports somehow do better when they actually get into it with the crowd and when they incite the crowd and they can feed off of that. Other people do not,” Rahm said.
Notably, each captain’s pick either played in 2023 or brings a proven front-line presence, reinforcing Donald’s commitment to a battle-tested squad.
“I’m very aware that we have lost three of the last four away Ryder Cups by significant margins and it’s a tough challenge,” Donald said. “It’s a tough environment, but I’ve tried everything I can to give our team the best opportunity.”
The Lone Newcomer: Rasmus Højgaard
All eyes turn to Højgaard–the only first-time call-up. Slotting in for twin Nicolai, Rasmus adds a fresh spark while maintaining the familial continuity of the team.
His inclusion, alongside seasoned campaigners like McIlroy and Rose, adds a subtle yet compelling dynamic to the team–balancing youthful vigour with veteran insight.
Donald isn’t just banking on familiarity; he’s preparing his squad for one of the most challenging Ryder Cup environments in decades. Europe will face the notoriously boisterous Long Island crowd at Bethpage Black, but Donald remains confident in his team’s mental fortitude; relying on both the leadership experience and a thorough preparation strategy.
“This isn’t certainly a question of rinse and repeat from Rome. The strategies and the thought processes and I’m trying to come at in this one is quite different to what we did in Rome,” Donald said.
“It’s nice to have a continuity within the team, the memories, the experiences that we got to celebrate together. When it comes to this Ryder Cup, it doesn’t necessarily mean we are going to have the same partnerships.”
McIlroy, Fleetwood, Rose, Rahm, Hatton, and Fitzpatrick will all enter with substantial Ryder Cup resumes, bolstering Europe’s psychological readiness under pressure.
Notable Snubs and Controversy
While Donald’s selections are solid, they weren’t met without critique. PGA Tour veterans like Harry Hall and Marco Penge voiced disappointment, questioning the lack of representation from those active on the European circuit.
However, public response has largely acknowledged the logic of retaining a proven squad that won in 2023, despite the absence of familiar faces like Nicolai Højgaard and Sergio Garcia.
Europe’s formula is clear: trust experience, maintain chemistry, and gear up for the hostile New York setup with composure.
From McIlroy to Rahm, the roster bristles with Ryder Cup firepower; from the inclusion of the twin Højgaard to the absence of high-profile veterans, the dynamics shape an interesting storyline both on and off the turf.
“If we were to win an away Ryder Cup with everything else that I’ve been through this year, 2025 would be the best year of my career,” McIlroy said.
