Ex-Bills Coach Brian Daboll Nearly Fired Amid Giants Collapse

Former Buffalo Bills coach Brian Daboll may be holding onto his job with the New York Giants by the thinnest of strings.

Daboll found success with the Giants after leaving his job as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator, leading them to the playoffs in his first season before struggling after that. The Giants hit a low point this season after a collapse against the Denver Broncos, with a new report claiming the team was set to fire Daboll in the hours after that game before a last-second change of heart from the team’s front office.

Brian Daboll ‘Was Fired’ Before ‘Cooler Heads Prevailed’

The Giants appeared to have a big win wrapped up with a 19-point lead over the Broncos in Week 7, but collapsed down the final stretch and lost. Radio host Shaun Morash of WFAN reported this week that the team’s ownership was prepared to fire Daboll as soon as he got off the plane after the loss, but ultimately decided against it.

“I’ve done some digging around and I’ve now gotten this from multiple people I trust, which is why I’m going to come here with it,” Morash said. “The Giants were firing Brian Daboll off the plane after the collapse in Denver. He was fired. Ownership got together and cooler heads prevailed. They decided not to fire Brian Daboll off the plane in Denver.”

Daboll’s job may still not be safe, with Morash reporting that some within the organization still favor firing him. That apparently does not include general manager Joe Schoen, who followed Daboll from Buffalo to take the GM job with the Giants. Morash reported that Schoen was not in favor of firing.

“In the immediacy of that collapse, the decision to throw on third-and-5, like (co-host) Tiki (Barber) had crushed after that game, apparently that was enough from people of importance with the Giants that he was fired off the plane in Denver and cooler heads have prevailed, which has now led to stories about the split ticket,” Morash reported. “Brian Daboll is as good as gone and was basically gone two weeks ago if not for somebody stepping up within ownership and calming that down.”

There have been signs of hope in New York despite the team’s 2-7 record. Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart has shown promise, while the team showed potential with a win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Changes in Buffalo’s Coaching Staff

There have been some coaching changes with the Bills this season, with head coach Sean McDermott saying he has shared play-calling duties with defensive coordinator Bobby Babich.

“(Defensive coordinator) Bobby (Babich) and I have done it together,” McDermott said after a win over the Carolina Panthers, via Syracuse.com. “We really have and that will continue. Bobby’s a great coach; we’ve done it together. We’ll continue to do it together.”

The Bills performed strongly on defense in the win over the Panthers and in last week’s win over the Kansas City Chiefs. The Bills had an aggressive pass rush that kept quarterback Patrick Mahomes under pressure in the 28-21 win.

McDermott has led the defense in the past, taking over play-calling duties after the departure of Leslie Frazier in 2023.
