Ex-Bills WR Stefon Diggs Stirs Controversy With Postgame Comments

Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs had a big return to Orchard Park on Sunday, making 10 receptions for 146 yards while leading the New England Patriots to a 23-20 upset win over the league’s last unbeaten team.

After the game, Diggs admitted that the return was “personal” — a comment that has stirred some controversy among Bills fans. Diggs had a successful but turbulent tenure with the Bills, coming to an end when the team traded him to the Houston Texans prior to the 2024 season.

Stefon Diggs Says Return Was Personal

In an on-field interview after the game, Diggs was asked if the performance was personal as he returned to Orchard Park for the first time since he left the Bills in March 2024.

“100 percent,” Diggs replied.

The remark drew some pushback from Bills fans and reporters, who noted that it was Diggs who appeared to orchestrate his departure from the Bills. The All-Pro wide receiver was at times vocal about his displeasure with the team, sharing cryptic remarks on social media and being sent home on the first day of mandatory minicamp in 2023 after a conflict with the coaching staff.

Massive eye-roll to Stefon Diggs saying tonight’s game was personal,” wrote reporter Ryan Talbot of Syracuse.com in a post on X. “The guy forced his way out of Buffalo. Unbelievable performance, no doubt, but let’s not act like the Bills moved on from you willingly. That was 100% Diggs.”

There were reports after the trade that it was Diggs who orchestrated his exit from Buffalo. Shortly after the Texans acquired him in a trade, running back Joe Mixon took to social media to reveal that Diggs had asked the Bills to trade him and the team complied.

“Stefon Diggs, just a few weeks ago you asked and we delivered,” Mixon wrote in a post on X. “Now let’s go get these rings (emoji).”

Stefon Diggs Addresses Win

Diggs was the shining star of a Patriots offense that otherwise struggled at times against the Bills. He consistently got the better of the Bills secondary and made a number of key plays to extend drives.

The Bills entered the game with a chance to take a three-game lead over the Patriots in the AFC East, but finished just one game ahead at 4-1, while the Patriots moved to 3-2. After the game, Diggs said he was excited to get a big primetime win.

“It was lit, prime time,” Diggs said, via The Associated Press. “It was electrifying. I knew it was going to be a test for us.”

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, who had a number of big plays including a falling-down pass to Diggs to extend the team’s final scoring drive, said it was a big return for the former Bills receiver.

“You know this was his storybook,” Maye said.

“Coming back here first game, prime time, you could see it all week. He just loves football,” Maye said. “He’s got a lot in the tank left, so it’s good he’s a Patriot.”

The Bills may have suffered another big loss during the game, losing linebacker Matt Milano to a pectoral injury. He had missed the last two weeks with a pectoral injury, and the team is expected to give a more in-depth update after he is evaluated early in the week.

The Bills will get a longer break, not taking the field again until Monday, Oct. 13, against the Atlanta Falcons. The team has a bye week after that, which could be a critical opportunity to get healthy.
