Ex-Chiefs 2-Time Super Bowl Champion WR Signs With AFC Contender: Report

Former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling popped up in the news again on the evening of October 27, just before the Monday Night Football outing against the Washington Commanders.

First, Pittsburgh Steelers beat reporter Brooke Pryor (ESPN) noted that “WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling worked out for the Steelers [on Monday] per the NFL Transaction wire.”

Then, a little over an hour later, ESPN colleague and NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported the following: “Free agent receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling plans to sign with the Steelers, per source. Reuniting with Aaron Rodgers from their Green Bay days.”

This news, involving the ex-Chiefs two-time Super Bowl champion, was simultaneously confirmed by FOX Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

In a follow-up post, Schultz revealed that “there were a few teams that showed interest in Marquez Valdes-Scantling, including the [Tampa Bay] Bucs, but the idea of reuniting with Aaron Rodgers proved to be the deciding factor. The Steelers had interest in MVS earlier this offseason as well. Now, they finally get him.”

Marquez Valdes-Scantling Was Hot & Cold With the Chiefs, but Often Came Through When It Mattered Most

There’s no doubt that Valdes-Scantling never lived up to his free agent contract with the Chiefs in terms of personal production, but Kansas City did raise two new Super Bowl banners during his only years with the franchise, so it’s hard to criticize the signing.

In total, “MVS” finished his Chiefs career with 63 regular season catches for 1,002 yards and 3 touchdowns, but he was targeted 123 times and had a poor reception rate of 51.2%.

His bigger impact came in the playoffs. Although MVS was similarly hot and cold during the postseason, he put together some very memorable games for KC fans.

All told, he caught 15-of-24 playoff targets for 250 yards and 3 touchdowns. His two monster postseason performances came in the 2022-23 AFC Championship game versus the Cincinnati Bengals (6 catches for 116 yards and 1 touchdown), and during the Divisional Round of the 2023-24 playoffs against the Buffalo Bills (2 catches for 62 yards).

Valdes-Scantling also recorded a receiving touchdown during Super Bowl LVIII, helping the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers.

Ex-Chiefs WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling Finds Perfect Fit With Steelers After Signing News

Valdes-Scantling has sort of fallen out of relevance since leaving Kansas City. He had a few big games with the New Orleans Saints in 2024 after a failed stint in Buffalo, but the veteran has yet to find a new consistent home at age 31.

His latest stop before Pittsburgh was San Francisco, but MVS was outplayed by other reserve WRs amid a rash of injuries, so that shotgun marriage didn’t last long. Valdes-Scantling is likely hoping the Rodgers reunion is a better fit.

Considering the Steelers’ need at wide receiver and the built-in chemistry with Rodgers, Pittsburgh could be the ideal location for the former Chiefs wideout to reboot his career.

At the very least, he can aid a veteran roster that is desperately trying to make it back to the Super Bowl before their soon-to-be 42-year-old quarterback retires.

Kansas City does not play the Steelers during the 2025 regular season, but the two AFC teams could always run into each other in the playoffs, as they have in the past. Until then, perhaps Chiefs fans will cheer MVS on as he looks to find some success with a new franchise.
