Ex-Giants QB Daniel Jones at Center of ‘Bold’ NFL Prediction

Things appear to be falling into place for former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, as he is now expected to win the Indianapolis Colts’ starting job in a “landslide” over recent first-round pick Anthony Richardson.

On July 11, with training camp just on the horizon, veteran Bleacher Report analyst Moe Moton featured Jones within his “bold” NFL predictions article.

The headliner: Jones not only beats out Richardson for the Colts’ QB1 role, but does so “by wide margin.”

Moton Explains Daniel Jones Training Camp Prediction

Moton offered a lengthy explanation for why he believes Jones will overtake Richardson in a blowout of a training camp battle.

“In a bit of an upset, Daniel Jones will unseat incumbent starting quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. for the lead position,” he began. “This offseason, the Indianapolis Colts signed Jones, who had a short stint on the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad and active roster after the New York Giants released him in November of last year. The seventh-year pro can turn this opportunity into a career rebirth.”

“Jones will have a stronger supporting cast in Indianapolis than he had with the Giants in recent years,” Moton argued. Continuing: “The Colts can go four deep at wide receiver with Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, Alec Pierce and Adonai Mitchell. They added rookie tight end Tyler Warren to a well-rounded pass-catching group. [And] All-Pro running back Jonathan Taylor can handle a massive workload on the ground.”

The writer went on to remind readers that “Jones has led a team to the playoffs.”

Adding: “In 70 games (69 starts), he’s thrown for 70 touchdowns and 47 interceptions with a 64.1 percent completion rate. Meanwhile, over the last two years, Richardson hasn’t been able to get through a full season healthy. On the field, he’s completed just 50.6 percent of his passes.”

Moton also noted that “Richardson suffered a shoulder injury during organized team activities and missed mandatory minicamp. [And] The Athletic’s James Boyd believes Jones has taken a ‘significant lead’ in the quarterback battle.”

“Based on Richardson’s erratic performances and injury history, he’s not going to retain his position,” the Bleacher Report analyst concluded. “Jones wins this battle in a landslide.”

Giants Have Moved on at Quarterback, But Did They Make the Right Choices This Time Around?

Opinions on Jones appear to be mixed following his 2024 departure. A contingent of Giants fans still believe the organization failed the former first-round pick, wishing him good luck as he attempts to revive his career.

Meanwhile, there’s no doubt others would rather see him fail. Jones never took Big Blue to the promised land, and watching him do that for the Colts would only prove that the ex-Giants QB was not the problem — meaning NYG made the wrong decision letting him go.

Either way, the Giants have moved on at quarterback entering 2025 training camp.

General manager Joe Schoen chose to embark on a full reboot at the position this offseason, outside of UDFA success story Tommy DeVito. They didn’t just draft a new potential franchise QB in Jaxson Dart; they also added a proven veteran starter in Russell Wilson, and one of the better backup QBs in football in Jameis Winston.

It was a full overhaul that left as little room for error as possible ahead of a pivotal 2025 campaign for the tenure of Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, but the all-important question is still very much unanswered.

Did the Giants choose right at quarterback this spring? And will their choices make enough of an impact to turn things around in East Rutherford?
