Ex-Lions QB Matthew Stafford Gets Major Career News

Former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford already owns some NFL records and a Super Bowl trophy, and now could add one more massive accolade to his Hall of Fame resume.

Stafford has led the Los Angeles Rams through the team’s rapid rebuild after their 2021 Super Bowl title, bringing them back to the top of the NFC and Super Bowl favorites once again. Stafford himself is in the midst of a stellar season and on track for the one NFL honor that has still eluded him — league MVP.

Matthew Stafford Rises to Top of MVP Race

As SI.com writer Peter Dewey noted, Stafford has become the runaway favorite to win league MVP this season, well ahead of New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye in second place.

“A three-touchdown performance in a blowout win on Sunday Night Football was all Stafford needed to skyrocket to the odds-on favorite in this market,” Dewey wrote.

“The Rams are now in control of the No. 1 seed in the NFC – a huge boost to Stafford’s case – and the veteran leads the NFL in touchdown passes with 30 in just 11 games. Oh, and he’s only been picked off twice!”

Though the MVP race is often muddled until the final weeks of the season, Stafford has some massive odds at winning it this year. He also has some soft opponents left on the schedule, giving him the chance to boost his resume even more.

“He has an implied probability of 67.74 percent to win the MVP and is the first odds-on favorite for the award since Josh Allen took that mantle early in the 2025 season,” Dewey wrote. “Stafford has a date with the Carolina Panthers’ leaky pass defense in Week 13 with a chance to build on an impressive statistical season.”

Though Stafford has never won league MVP, an award this year could cement his status as a future Hall of Famer.

Jared Goff Leading Lions Back to Top of the NFC North

While the Detroit Lions have not enjoyed the level of success as the Rams, they have also come out ahead from the massive 2021 trade that shipped Stafford to Los Angeles. Quarterback Jared Goff has helped the team rise from the basement of the NFC to win back-to-back division titles, and last week’s win over the New York Giants put the Lions in first place once again.

The Lions now face a quick turnaround before their annual Thanksgiving Day opener and a matchup against division foe Green Bay Packers.

Goff told reporters on Sunday that he was getting back to work immediately, starting to gameplan for Jordan Love and the dangerous Green Bay team.

“Yeah, you start watching it tonight. As soon as you get home, get to work,” Goff said, via SI.com. “I think our coaches are probably on their way to the facility to get to work themselves. We’re used to the tradition of this. We’ve played Green Bay in this game before, so we have some familiarity with it, too. Division game, at our place, Thanksgiving, everything you want. They’re a great team and we’ll be ready.”
